Im fairly new to chess and I've found I really enjoy watching chess as much as I do playing it. My question is what has to happen for there to be a world championship match? Looks like there is some kind of candidates tournament or something like that but I'm just wondering how it works. There's been lots of talk about Wesley So playing better than Magnus at the moment so I'm hoping we eventually get a match between the two and since I'm from the USA I would love to see it.

They're going to start the Candidates Tournament in about 6 weeks. The winner gets fed to Magnus in 2018.

Not sure how it works right now, but here is how it used to work:

The first step is to qualify for your Zonal championship. Some countries are a zone in themselves, other countries are grouped together into a zone. The top finishers in the Zonals are invited to an Interzonal. The top finishers in an Interzonal are invited to the Candidates. Several other players are seeded directly into Interzonals or the Candidates, such as the player who lost the previous WCC match, and the top players off the world's rating list. The Candidates matches determine who will play against the World Chess Champion.

if you offer enough money, the president of FIDE will arrange a match between you and Carlsen.

If you're from outer space, he'll set you up with a match, too. Read the Wiki entry on the FIDE president.

Hmmm, the alien abduction story from the FIDE president is fairly entertaining

If you're a fan of someone other than Magnus being champion you have 2 legit American contenders who might be the first American world champions after fisher.

The challenger will be the winner of a Candidates Tournament with eight players:[citation needed]

This tournament is expected to place from March 8 to March 29, 2018.[3]

Well you can see almost a 3 year break in there. I got back into it a couple months ago.

Basically, FIDE has to decide that there will be one.

The Wikipedia link answered it thanks. Hoping for an American challenger!
