How to get back into chess?

So having been out of chess for so long, I downloaded babaschess and started playing some games. OUCH!! I think I lost about 15 games in a row, if not more, and my rating dropped nearly 300 points. I truly am horrible at this game now. I used to play at the strength of about a 2000 rating (officially rated 1850), but now I feel like I'm playing at about a 1200 level.

What do I do to clear the cobwebs the fastest?

Yeah, I know how you feel, I'd like to know the answer to this question too.. but I've always suffered from extreme chess blindness anyway, so I don't think anything can help me..  :)

jay: i recommend you read Sharpen Your Tactics! i think that will do two things for you: #1 get you back in the mood, and #2 heal your "chess vision"

if i can find my copy i'll lend it to you, otherwise i think you know where to get it pretty cheap :)

Just do what you did before you stoped playing. Play a lot of games so you get back into the game. Also you might want to study tactics and maybe the endgame too. That should help you.

Yeah, tactics, tactics, tactics. That's what always decides the game for me. Whether I played a fantastic opening or a really poor one, it doesn't seem to really matter. The deciding factor in my games usually comes from some unexpected tactic in the middle game, so it seems to me that you don't need to study the opening too much until you're a pretty strong player.

As Richard Teichmann said, maybe a bit facetiously, "Chess is 99% tactics."

Even openings can be tactical. Bruce Pandolfini sold a bunch of books on that premise.

Teichmann, by the way, who looked more like a pirate than a chess-player, had a plus score against both Alekhine and Schlechter and almost even scores against Tarrasch, Rubinstein, Janowski and Maróczy. So, he probably knew what he was taling about.
