Hello Chess Players,
I wanted to ask those of you rated 1450+. How did you do it? About a week ago, I had an online chess tournament in my chess club and I placed 1st. A couple of days later I placed 2nd in their next tournament and at that time I was around 1300 online rating. Then I kept playing blitz games (usually 5 minutes or 3+2) and my rating plummeted to 1170 in just 2 days.
I am confused about how this happened. I analyze the games I play, I play daily chess, I'm about 1970 rated in tactics, and I read chess books. Yesterday I finished Matthew Sadler's "Tips for young players" and I'm 30 pages away from finishing John Emms' "Discovering Chess Openings" and afterward I will start reading Logical Chess, Move by Move by Irving Chernev, and Silman's Endgame Course. I'm also continuing to read Fred Reinfield's 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations.
I'm not focused on learning openings, because I understand that's not what lower-rated players like 1300s need to study, but I have recorded openings I play and traps in the studies section. I usually like playing the Najdorf and Taimanov variation of the Sicilian as black, and Guioco Piano and the Ruy Lopez as white. Although I do play bullet chess sometimes, I try not to play too much because I understand it is not helping me practice tactics.
I used to go to chess tournaments in my area until they got canceled. I placed first in three chess tournaments, 2nd in one, and 3rd in two. I'm not only interested in chess, as a 13-year old I have other things to do (mostly math) but I usually spend about four hours a day on chess. I am rated at 1242 regular rating USCF (based on 21 games) and I desire to jump to 1450 and go from there. I would appreciate tips on how to get there. Thank you!
A 1450 rating doesn't mean anything in itself. It only means something in context of the particular group it is from. So first, you need to clarify if you are talking about 1450 online blitz or rapid or bullet from chess.com or lichess or the USCF or wherever.
The only ratings that will get you titles which mean anything are from over the board games run by FIDE or the US Chess Federation.
Obviously, those over the board tournaments are going to be on hold for a while.
It sounds like you are doing the right things. Sometimes it takes a while to assimilate a lot of new ideas.
I notice that you mostly play bullet even though you give lip service to the idea that longer time controls allow you to think.
It's up to you.
The Chernev book is a great one. Many people rate it highly. I hope you enjoy it.
