Now think about who's really important to chess.com - Staff, Moderators, Titled members who are well known, etc
Unless you can offer something things categories of people can't, or fit one of these categories, you can forget about VIP status althogether.

I don't think it's just for a referral but the referred member also has to upgrade to premium.

Yea. When you get VIP you can get an award ONLY if you pay for it. You can’t get it if you are using the free trial because you aren’t supporting chess.com. So yea
