One mistake new players make is that they try to promote pawns as soon as possible.
DONT DO THAT!!!

allright i've adapted a new rule of thumb. Play 1. e4. If my opponent plays an unusual opening and/or is less then ~130 rating. Then go for the scholar's mate. Otherwise play normally. But if they start with a4 or h4 then just quit the game because they are probably sandbagging.

For example in this very intelligent game agianst a 110 rated player.

Well that’s a terrible plan. Rule #1: always expect your opponent to see the best move. Rule #2: Always play the best move

Then you have never played 100 elo chess. Because rule 1 almost never happens.

Are there any gambits or traps i can learn to consistantly defeat low rated players? Because the players around this range make moves so bad and exotic that i have no idea how to counter them.

Chess isn’t easy. It isn’t just “oh give me an opening that always wins” 😒Beat your opponent, don’t trick them. Scholars Mate and other simple traps aren’t going to work soon

Try learning theory.

This is terrible advice. You’re rated 140. At your level most players hang their queen around move 5. And still win! 🤷🏼‍♂️

The point is, right now sure your opponents going to hang pieces left and right, but not when you get a little stronger. Stop playing dumb traps now so you don’t have to break the habit later.

The way to win vs players in this bracket is to let them beat themselves. Play normal good moves, let them play the weird moves that make no sense, then take advantage of the hanging pieces and big weaknesses they give themselves. It's not necessary to go chasing scholars mate or playing some systematic sequence of opening moves and it also won't help you build a foundation to become a decent player.

At first my dad didn't know much about chess but I didn't either so his random moves kept beating me. However, as I got better and learned tactics, those random moves make him lose tempi and I can win now.

This is my most recent game. I was actually able to beat a 222 rated player. How they got 222 rating in the frist place idk.

Had they not resigned i probably would have been able to get them with a scholar's mate like pattern or a back rank checkmate after a few turns.

I think u already know this but play a game everyday! U can play with opponents with different strengths and weaknesses. U can improve and learn from the games play!
Colonizor48

I'm approching 200 rating. Which i know it might not seem like a big deal. But for me it is.

PickleWrap

im 1200 rated

Miniongolf

I would recommend playing slightly stronger players (like 1000s) because 100 play is too unpredictable to be instructive.

Good. You played normally and sensibly and your opponent hung all his pieces. You can get many wins like this. 4.dxc5 by the way.

Yeah that was a missed win. I saw that in the post game analisis.

The question is why did you not see it in the game? You were moving too quickly perhaps?
