How to improve in blitz?
To get good at blitz, you play slow chess

Practice tactics. Studying openings isn't necessary for blitz since many openings are viable in blitz. Also, check for blunders before every move.

Playing in bullet/blitz require significant amount of effort(fast thinking/burning your brain). To win your opponent, you must have stronger knowledge or stronger thinking.
As we are getting older, our brain cant calculate as fast as the teens anymore. To use my calculations efficiently
1. Always expect the best response of your opponent and do premove if it is safe( for example, if you play 1.e4 you can follow up with 2.Nf3 in 90% of case , so aim your pointer in king kt, then change to other moves , only if they play. 1......d5. However if you play 1.d4, you can do 2. premove c4(quite safe).
2. Dont think second alternative, use pre programmed strategy. (I play Caro-kann as black, I will try to survive in opening and I will do c file and b file push as soon as out of opening)
3. Use your memory to prevent hanging pieces( we cant always calculate hanging pieces all the time,), for example, if I see opponent bishop on Bf5 on my d4,e3 pawn set up, I keep in my memory that I cant use my rook in 'b' file. (cos of power of B on b1 square)
These are just a few of my tips.

What did you do to improve in blitz? Let's say from 1300 to 1600 or stronger?
Read chess books. Solve puzzles. Play over GM games / follow top tournaments.
Also play slow games. Play in OTB tournaments. Do this for 3-6 months.
After all that, play your favorite blitz time control a few hours a day for a few weeks. At the end of those weeks you'll be at your peak blitz performance.
---
More specifically, know your openings well, and pace yourself. Some people play too quickly or too slowly. Don't get caught up in your opponent's pace in either direction.
Look for little tricks, like shorthand, you can use to find a move quickly.
A simple example would be a bishop a few squares away from a knight controls all it's forward squares.
If a knight threatens a piece, if you move that piece to the same color square then that knight can't threaten it again.
Little things like this. Then, during the blitz game, don't worry too much about mistakes. Move fast and use these little tricks.

At 1300-1600 maybe this tip will help:
Don't initiate any trades unless you see it will win material (or you're capturing one of their most active minor pieces).
Just ignore all captures. If they threaten something, just keep defending it and wait for them to capture first.
If you're forced to move a piece, and you have a choice between capturing and retreating, then retreat.
----
Rules like this might make your play objectively worse, but moving like this seems to confuse weaker players in blitz

Other things: use the bathroom beforehand, sit with your feet flat on the floor and sit up, and relax.
It’s pretty surprising how much better you’ll play if you’re not slouching and distracted.
And above all: there is no secret to it.

Thanks a lot. I heard already about not trade without clear reasons. I do this in normal chess, but in blitz I probably make horrible trades all the time. I have to go though my games.

guys don't believe these patzers who are saying to grind puzzles for blitz. My puzzle rating is 2800 and my blitz is 1600. Puzzles are for long games. You should do puzzle rush and just play a lot of blitz games. I think openings are important in blitz, so that you don't need to spend time at the beginning of the game. Learn a few solid openings and then stick with them. Grind puzzle rush. And just play blitz more.

Study chess.
Is like driving. You start slow, then it becomes automatic. If you work a bit every day, your overall chess strength will improve, and also your blitz =). But short therm advice is to work hardly in simple tactics.
