how to improve in blitz games

Hi everyone -
I feel that I am in a weird position right now on chess.com. I have studied a ton of theory about tactics, endgames and openings. My daily rating on that account is about 1800, my tactics rating 1700ish. Yet my blitz rating is somewhere between 600 and 700. There are 2 types of games, those where I try to avoid blunders and think carefully and run out of time, and those where I play quickly (still slower than my opponent most of the time) and lose due to blunders like throwing away my queen. Are there any suggestions from your side how I can improve this? Is there a certain think pattern I might need to learn or maybe just practice more?

I don’t see a daily rating?

Your rapid rating is provisional so you should play at least an other (20) 15/10 for us to get an accurate key performance indicator.

A 1700 puzzles rating is low; shoot for 3000. If 1700 is accurate, your 800 blitz rating is correct.

A survival rush of 27 is low as well; shoot for 50.

I think you are overestimating your abilities based on your current data compared to known general trends.

Thanks for your answer! It's here, on a different account. I started a new one to feel less under pressure of ratings grin.png
While I generally understand that puzzle ratings and daily ratings don't translate to blitz games 1 to 1, I never see players around my blitz rating with a higher puzzle or daily rating. So I still assume there is something I do wrong and where I could improve, other than reading more books and doing more tactics. I can easily see why I lost games in the aftermath, I feel I just need to be quicker in my calculations somehow.

EDIT: seems like puzzles got a lot easier over the last 2 years and now include a broader rating range? seems like 1700 is not accurate anymore.

Why do you want to improve? To what end?

That's right - they made a change to puzzle ratings whereby you still get a minimum of +5 (if you get it right) no matter how long you take. So puzzle rating now is largely a matter of patience and determination. A better indication of your skill at doing tactics fast would be your chess tempo blitz rating, or your average 5 min puzzle rush score.

Blitz is a totally different game than daily.

Don't expect to improve if you’re going to play speed chess, just have fun.

Give 5/5 a shot because the quality of play is similar to 10/0.

Than work your way down to 3/2.

In order to be a good Blitz player, you need to be a good chess player first. So focus on becoming better at slow chess. Your blitz skills will improve automatically.

I think that is a weird question. I guess winning is more fun than losing and setting and reaching goals makes happy? also you want to see progress in your games.

Alright, thanks everyone for your answers!
Apparently the rating difference is not so unusual and I just need to play more.
I was hoping for a bit of insight on how good blitz players determine their moves, but maybe it's not so different from the other modes.

I think to some extent you answered your own question in the first post: you either play slowly and lose on time or play quickly and blunder on the board. That’s not something you can just flick a switch and overcome. I’m not a great blitz player, but I’m certainly OK - better than average. I would say a few of the main qualities are:

1) Hardly ever blundering badly - errors are a given but putting pieces where they can be taken or failing to take freebies/ walking into forks/pins/skewers etc is a no no, even at high speed.

2) have to know all basic endings and also being able to quickly finish games when you have a large advantage but little time. For example king and Q vs King  should be an easy win with 5-10 seconds even if no increment

3) sense of danger: have to know when a move looks too risky even if you don’t see why, often the objectively best move isn’t the best choice if it requires walking a tightrope afterwards

4) know when to stop playing chess and start hustling - that applies more to 3 0.

I could add several more but basically you need good board vision and remember no matter how much you’ve studied, knowledge doesn’t equal skill. The poster just above was correct, to improve at blitz you have to improve generally at chess. Good luck.

3 0 means 3 min (blitz) with no increment.
