How to Maintain Energy During a Tournament

Obviously -- eating well, sleeping well, exercise and good health are good for a tournament and one's quality of life.

Tournaments are very demanding though, be they 9 round international opens or a 5 round weekend swiss.

My problem with energy is compounded by growing age.

Any hints or tips on how to perform well on all batteries?

I think the best thing is eating well, staying hydrated, and exercising during the tournament.

@Ravin -- I have taken some quick draws from time to time but don't feel good about that because why play at all then? Admittedly, it was nice to draw against a 2295 FM in 11 moves in one tourney, when we both felt tired in round 4 it should be mentioned! But I was already tired. Wish I wasn't by then; it was a 7 round tourney.

@chessisgood -- what sort of exercise do you recommend? I keep it down to a simple half hour walk in a park each morning. Something strenuous like swimming would be OK?

Bring fruit such as bananas/apples, etc. and other healthy food such as nuts to the game/tournament. When you feel low, eat some of your fruit/nuts to boost your energy. Avoid candy and junk food at all costs.

The reason is that junk food, such as candy/sugary treats, provides a very temporary boost followed by a quick crash in energy. Fruit is more naturally absorbed by the body and provides a long term energy boost that should make it easier to maintain concentration.

aircons... turn them off. They tend to increase "pressure" when you're winning won positions lol

I am personally very interested into this topic, as I struggle in my games to keep active and save energy. The most recommended ideas from anyone is eating heathy, exercising, bringing small snacks to the tournament, staying hydrated, ect. I would like to learn more about this topic.
