Here's a title for you thats along the same lines "How to start losing rating points fast to slower players"

You simply start losing to one or two. They get the idea that if they play slow enough you give them easy points. There you have it, how to lose your rating points fast. Laughing

Little-Ninja

Of course more practical would be to change the time frame of your moves. 1 day per move or 3 days at the most if you haven't the patients to play longer games.

 Not on purpose.

I hear they are starting a boxing-chess league in your area Smile

I like to open with the scholar's mate and then promptly sac my queen for a knight on f6 or f3 ... that usually makes them a bit braver and they move faster.

This is only in blitz though, against someone who seems determined to lose on time... did I mention I don't play much serious online chess heh.

so you win by check mate or knock out?

Stalk them

I always love when people get involved in 3 or more day games, then get upset when their opponent uses the maximum time allowed. If you agree to these time limits, then don't complain. Thats what 1 or 2 day games are for.

ivandh

^ I use three day limits because I have a life and I can't guarantee that I will be able to check in every 24 hours. However, I do not intentionally take all three days for every move just because I am losing.

DanielleSurferGirl

Whether your opponent is winning or losing you have to face the fact that if you choose a 3 day limit game, your opponent could use 3 days per move, therefore 40 moves on his or her part could take up to 120 days. not counting your moves a 3 day per move game could possibly take anywhere from 4- 8 months. That's just part of the game.

TheOldReb

What upsets people isnt that their opponent may take the maximum time allowed per move, but that many dont do this UNTIL they reach a position in which they really should resign ! If my opponent wants to make me mate him/her...... fine I will but I do get irritated when they take maximum time per move ONLY when they have reached a completely hopeless position when they have NOT been doing so UNTIL they start losing. This is intentionally dragging the game out and I can certainly see how it would irritate people because it irritates me too. Now, for those of you that like to point out that its "their right" and that they are within the rules, blah blah blah I will point out for you thats its also the right of those who are irritated by it to complain about this very unsportsmanlike behavior.

It was on the news a few weeks ago, in LA I think, box a round, then a few timed moves, repeat. KO and Mate are the same, or resign. Seems like the idea is to try to keep your wits in spite of being punch-drunk and exhausted. Guess chess virtual war is not enough for some and some real violence is required.

The key here is to cultivate a calm, serene outlook. You're winning! Your opponent may be a bit of a jerk, and it's certainly boring to play out a simple win at glacier speed, but nothing he's doing is illegal or unethical, just annoying. So just keep your cool and win. Don't succumb to the temptation to say things you won't be proud of later, just win.

Well said. Plus I always chuckle to myself that they are so lost that "waiting it out" is all they have left. They torture themselves by slowing in lost positions.
