How to Perserve a Cardboard Chess board

I GOT the new Game Of Thrones Chess board as a Birthday gift recently as a brithday gift. Some of the peices are big and fall over easily; I have ordered some megnetic stickers to place at the bottom of the board and peices so they sit better on the board but I am worried that it may scratch up the design on the board.
I am wondering if anyone has any experiance or ideas or even tips on Laminating the board or knows a good way to perserve a cardboard Chess Board??
