How to set Rybka moves

Hi everyone. I have been studying Rybka (I set games between Rybka 4 and other engines). But one thing bothers me very much. Rybka makes some odd openings and initial moves. I want to force Rybka to make some specific initial moves, is there a way to do that?

I use arena 3.0, which I already find difficult because the only way I can set a game between 2 engines is in the tournament mode, is there a way to set an engine for white and another for black beyond the tournament mode? Thank you very much, I really want to make my study of chess easier and faster.

AlxMaster

Oh and another thing. Whenever I move a piece, the engine answers in the other side. Sometimes that pisses me off. Is there a way to TURN OFF the engines in arena 3.0, like a hotkey or something?

If I can hotkey engines on/off and set a fixed engine for white and a different one for black, my problem is really solved. Thanks.

I didn't ask if I should or not study Rybka and I will not discuss such a thing here, but thanks for the "edit" tip.

My initial questions are still up.

AlxMaster

Thank you for your kindness.

AlxMaster

By the way, I didn't find this "edit" button, unless you are referring to the "set up a position", which is not helpful.

AlxMaster

Ok, congratulations and thank you.

Now if anyone would like to help me with my initial questions, I would apprectiate.

AlxMaster

Thank you, now I got it, it's very helpful.

Now I only need to set a fixed engine for black and another for white.

pfren what is wrong with your head? such unwarranted aggression, what happened to cause you to act this way? and all along while you were being an asshole he was being kind, and you still choose to be an asshole.

AlxMaster if you want to save some time there are already people who have played thousands of games between chess engines. The site "http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/" has more games than you'll ever want, and if you want to look at games in a specific opening you can check "http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/opening_report_by_eco.html"

I downloaded a file with all games, but can't open it.

Can the games be visualized in ChessDB?

I'm not sure if its a problem with memory or what, it is a rather large file.

If you right click on the pgn you should be able to have it open with arena or chessbase lite. Also i've noticed that with a file that size arena tends to screw up some of the games.

AlxMaster

Do you know how to set a fixed engine for arena white and a different one for black?

Oecleus

you can probably do it by engines>tournament but i don't see the usefullness of it because there are already countless games at the link i provided and i don't believe there is an option to select a specific opening under "tournament"

AlxMaster

The tournament option is not useful, because I can't force specific moves. I want to do it outside tournament. The database will be useful as soon as I can open it.

AlxMaster

The extension of the database from that site is .7z I don't know how to open it.

The idea of a juicy database full of Rybka games is tempting, but what bothers me about this database, is that it has thousands of engines. Some are strong, some are weak. I would really like to study only the best engines available. Then again, I went to the option of downloading specific engine games, but the games of rybka are only a few thousand, that's too few as I want to study a good number of initial moves.

Why can't you open the database? Is it because you don't know how to open a 7z file? (Go to http://www.7-zip.org/ and download 7-Zip.)

The tournament option has nothing to do with an engine playing only certain lines. You'll have to create a new Arena opening book containing only the lines you want the engine to play, then you'll have to tell the engine to use that new book.

AlxMaster

How do I create a new arena opening book?

How do I make the engine use it?

Does that work in tournament mode?

I'm not sure what you're asking here. You can simply load two engines using "Engines -> Manage -> Select". (Change the order of the two engines in the list to change which engine gets white or black.)

Or you can just set up a tournament with two engines.

Most of the answers to your questions are in the Arena help file.

AlxMaster

I went to the help file, and it said that most engines will use the arena main opening book, which is what I believe Rybka is doing. But that we can set specific engine opening books. However I couldn't work out how to do that. Can anyone help?

When I study chess games I often study Tal or Andersen. Their games are beutiful. Watching Rypka playing against another computer is lame. It's almost like watching Magnus Carlsen's games ;)
