i personally noticed my biggest improvement after I downloaded 4 chess apps to help my game along. I have an iphone and got chess.com, shredder(black knight facing right on top of upside down blue knight facing left), chesspro (yellow knight with pro written under it), and openings(white bishop on blue background). I mainly used chess pro because it allows me to see the 4 best moves ahead simuntainously and played against the computer a bunch of times to improve my overall prowess of chess. The most important things I've learned is to focus on one oppening and get really good at knowing its strengths and weakness(my favorite is queens gambit for white and sicilian defense dragon variaton for black) and KEEP CONTROL OF THE CENTER(not in all cases but most)
