How would you handle?

There are still some ways for White to go wrong in this ending, although I agree that it is a draw with best play. Perhaps your opponent did not want to point out a possible winning idea because he hopes you will miss it.

I was playing a senior master once, Jay Whitehead, and he asked me a similar question. In a loud and agitated voice he indignantly said, "You're just trying to run me off the clock. This is a dead draw!" I calmly explained, "No. I'm going to sac my queen for your rook on e3 and win the king and pawn ending." He said, in an apologetic tone, "Oh yeah. You're right." 

I don't think he would boast about how much of a dick he is going to be if he were only interested in concealing his plan.
