BlackLeopard-1, From my experience you cannot have a exchange of thoughts or ideas with someone who insists on defining which words mean what. They are intent on telling you what you just said and/or meant (according to them) and you are intent on clarification, you lose everytime. The classic definition of a fanatic: Someone who doubles their efforts after losing sight of the objective. They're not going to allow you any say so, got it?
Hubris of a forum admin
I'm a member of tha group, but I visit it very seldom because the members there are very educated, know their stuff, and they'll give you a good argument for your money. I believe its by invite only. Black Leopard, you must of sounded like a rational balanced person in some other thread that they noticed. Its high class forums. We're you talking to an Admin or just a member?? The leader, I believe is Keyoke Smiles and she's very nice. I just recently became aware of how many groups there are here. Many more that I thought. There's a military group that I SHOULD be a member of.
@thatchamUK
That's precisely what it felt like he was doing -- telling me what I say - according to him.
I think he had a problem with what I "believed" in.
You know how Christians, when they speak of Jesus..
They don't always start off every sentence with -
Jesus - then qualify it with (who, in my very strong opinion is the son of God)....everytime they speak.
When people "believe" in something, their world view paradigm has already shifted into that context of their faith.
It would be nonsensical and obtuse to accuse persons of faith (in any religion) of "disguising their opinions and sell it as dictums".
The argument over the meaning of "belief" and "opinion" was because he insisted it was just that.
Leopard... I enjoyed your intelligent debate in that group and I shall miss you. Leaving was a mistake, you should have stayed. I didn't even know that argument was going on as I tend to avoid anything with 'God' or 'Jesus' in the title... but having gone back and revisited that thread. You were having a good debate. You put your points across well and were winning the argument in my view.

HeyokaSmiles is a girl?...Oops. Thought it was a guy all this time.
She was the Admin that gave me the ultimatum that I "......." (don't remember all that she said) or I get kicked out of her group.
I chose to keep my freedom of expressing myself the way I like (it wasn't as if I wasn't swearing or agressing anyone).
I removed myself from the group.

That's an important distinction IMO. You can talk about ideas or you can talk to the crowd / yourself.
Thank you Babytigrrr.
I appreciate that.
Thanks, shell_knight. Everybody.
Am going to sign off now.
See you all later.
She may have been telling you about the rules of the group. I wonder if you misunderstood her?? Look, if you don't feel comfortable in ANY group then back out. I'll try to mend fences for ya, but I'm in about 6 threads at the moment.
belief vs. opinion
I was trying to get a handle on the difference between "belief" and "opinion".
Take for example the statement below:
"I believe in God" or even "I believe in you"
There is no way to replace that sentence above with "opinion".
And you certainly cannot FORCE another human being to change that declaration of his and put " opinion" in there somehow.
Simply put you cannot deny another human being the right from believing in something.
Even if it is YOUR OPINION that what he believes in doesn't exist.
it is no longer about religion.
this is about language, the words used to "communicate"
the obtuseness that confounds everything - leads to "failure to communicate"
I like this famous scene from Cool Hand Luke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fuDDqU6n4o
I edited what I said just above your post ...
perhaps it will be more comprehensible to you know.
I took out intellectual dwarfism (stunted growth on an intellectual level) - this latter only serves to confuse even more...so never mind
below are all "synomyms" of the word - opinion
assessment,assumption,attitude,conclusion,feeling,idea,impression,judgment,mind,notion,point of view,reaction,sentiment,speculation,theory,thought,view, viewpoint,conception,conjecture,estimate,estimation,eye, fancy,guess,hypothesis,inclination,inference, persuasion, postulate, presumption,presupposition,say-so, slant,supposition,surmise,suspicion,take,theorem,thesis,think,imagining
there's a reason why all these words exist.
they all connote very specific meanings, nuances...
the thesaurus is used by academicians, journalists and writers to succinctly convey what they mean, TO COMMUNICATE ...
confounding all those words due to obtuseness leads to failure in communication
whisky, wine, champagne, beer are all alcoholic beverages...
It's like changing this sentence-
I prefer beer over wine. I don't much like champagne. Once in a while I'll drink whisky.
to
I prefer alcoholic beverage over alcoholic beverage. I don't much like alcoholic beverage. Once in a while I'll drink alcoholic beverage.
Well, "intellectual dwarfism" - I just threw it in there for fun!
I made that term up last night...at least I thought I did, but it turns out that the term was already created - by this guy -Wahiduddin Khan, an Islamic scholar...
But you're only 17 years old, you're in no danger of intellectual dwarfism...there's still college and the rest of your life to develop intellectually.
Anyways, two fields of science/studies - taxonomy and etymology - exist so that humankind may communicate succinctly, share ideas, concepts with one another...we've moved a long way away from the days when cavemen raised their clubs and grunted menacingly at each other when communicating.
We've definitely changed a lot. Whether we've "moved a long way" (implying that the change is positive) is subjective.
No, it's just one of those scenes in movies that just stick in your head. Like you can forget everthing about the film...but you'll always remember that one scene...
So evertime there is failure in communication...that scene always pop into mind...it's funny. That is all.
Like this scene here - "Badges? We ain't got no badges?! We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges!"
It's like you don't even remember the film - but you'll always remember the scene - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsdZKCh6RsU
Or the scene in Gone With the Wind where Prissy says"
Oh, Lordy, Miss Scarlett!
Well, what is it?
Lordy, we's got to have a doctor!
I don't know nothing about birthing babies!
We've definitely changed a lot. Whether we've "moved a long way" (implying that the change is positive) is subjective.
Macer,
this riposte -
"You know it's subjective, don't you?" or "
You know it's just your opinion, don't you?" -
in any sort of dialogue, are being whipped out, in knee-jerk reaction in conversations way too often...Fortunately, it only goes on in chess.com internet forums. I wonder why that is?...In other forums, the exchange of ideas, opinions, thoughts are more fluid...but I did notice this obsession with "high IQ"s here.....
I was watching a talk on artificial intelligence given by MIT professors - 2 reknowned linguists, a neuro scientist, a computer scientist and a geneticist (this latter a Nobel Prize laureate) - they were ALL giving their OPINIONS on the future of artificial intelligence. Thank "God", they didn't interrupt each other at every turn with " You know it's just your opinion, don't you?" or "Yes, but you know it's subjective, don't you?"
Speaking of "high IQ"s....
thanks to the people with "high IQ"s, this planet is plagued with unsolvable problems - air, land and water pollution of - toxic and radioactive waste, carcinogenic chemicals, endless landfills of non-biodegradable trash and,
climate change
as well as those swords of Damocles - nuclear arsenals and deadly viruses concocted in laboratories...
Your average joeschmoe could never have come up with all that....
I don't equate "high IQ"s with "intelligence".
Yes, yes, yes, I'll say it myself so you don't have to say it -
It's just my "opinion".
Thanks :)
