You posted with the sole intention of getting a rise out of Reb -- if that's not trolling, I don't know what is.

Trolling means inciting indiscriminately. When it is targeted at an individual, it is known as a prank/rivalry/feud/flame war.

I'm not talking about the whole state. Just the little town called Boring. Also John Day. They're both dinky towns that roll up the sidewalks at six o'clock. At least they used to be that way when I was there, many years ago.

good riposte Smile to be honest I've never been to Oregon at all, but there was this girl from Portland that lived with me in LA back in '83 - still got photos - she were double gorgeous - though she'd never win a quiz Smile

Conflagration_Planet

So what happened?

I found her - she moved in (I had very large roomy house) an' she were friendly - I left LA, but I plannin' on goin' back later this year to check that all my old friends are ok Smile - she one of 'em Smile

Real chess players only play over the board....

JUST KIDDING!

All forms and flavors of chess are "real chess." However, you don't have to enjoy EVERY game to be a real chess player. When you get spanked, you can learn from the game but do you enjoy it?

All games are REAL.

Once you master the basic moves, learn:  the end game , some combinations,( pins, fork, uncovered attack, forcing moves etc.), Its all about learning openings and previous games etc. If you want to learn everything you just need to put in the time. Bobby Fisher , the ultimate chess champion of his day, used to read old Russian chess magazines to pass the time. I mean, when other people were getting more social skills in a bar or party, or getting a suntan on the beach, or having a beer with friends. This is a hobby for introverts.   And look where he ended up.  A lone man on a freezing Island in the Atlantic. And without a passport. Not something to look forward to if you are looking into the future in chess.( he got kicked out of the Far East because of a revoked US passport. I don't know if this is a good endgame.

If life is like chess, great chess players should be millionaires. no?

Chesslifesucks_123

Let's be honest here.  Chess life sucks and is largely unproductive.

It's a serious time suck.  That is the reality.

There are lots of things that contribute more to your own self improvement (reading, physical activity, relationships).  If chess is something you want to dedicate time to (opportunity costs), it's a good fit for you.  It's a game worth knowing, trying to improve some, but really, to dedicate enormous amounts of time to.... meh.

hanweihehai

it's a game ,for fun not money

I get it. Chess is a fun game but it's not something anyone should spend their life on IMO. There is more to life than chess.
