"Consider chess players as smarter?" That's probably a fallacy but at the same time you can't be dumb and get good at chess.

dumb = stupid. Now, there is dumber than dumb. Tongue out  I'm not sure if those poor people could improve much, if any, at chess. But it's not easy being stupid, so it's not nice to pick on them. Smile

So, stupid people can't get good at chess? Can you be stupid in some things but smart at chess? I'm thinking about multiple intelligences here, i.e., stupid in sports - smart at math.

'S a hobby, mate.  If it isn't your ball of wax, best move on and get started on the novel or homeless shelter or contemplation of loftier thoughts.

I'm a big fan of chess as a daily mental exercise, a big fan of sport as a daily physical exercise, and a big fan of my work as a means to financial and social ends.  Chess is just a delicious part of this balanced breakfast.

Find your own balance.

You said it all, Mate! Chess is food for the neurons.

It fights Alzheimer's, for one plus, for sure!

He dislikes chess because people that play it are stupid, they mistreat their family lives, you aren't allowed to every do anything else if you play chess, and so forth.  Geh, if people could just dislike things, and leave it at that, instead of trying to convince everyone else. There's nothing worse than people trying to belittle someones passion or enthusiasm. Which is what these assholes allways do.

All this improvement is great, but all that does is get us in the game to play for improvements that we need in the future, so that we can be aggressive in the marketplace.

ah but...you see...in order to play for future marketplaces you need to aggress the improvement in which you are standing on right now to appreciate the intricacies of future improvement strategies...

Practice DOES make perfect, especially in piano.... I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE TOO!

So you're saying you play piano perfectly. You're joking.

That's not a question. I'm telling you: you are, in fact, joking. Piano can't be perfected. Chess has a better chance of being perfected than piano, and I'm sure we all agree that chess won't be "solved" in the foreseeable future. The phrase "practice makes perfect" is almost universally rejected in favor of the much truer "Practice makes permanent."

You can’t just look at Chess as a collection of features like tactics, strategies, etc.; some of the features make no sense in isolation. You can only use the sum of the parts if you are thinking about Winning, not simply playing.

And to understand Chess this way, you must understand the problems with Chess and with playing in general. This thread discusses Chess player's problems, why they are problems, and the approach Chess.com has taken to solve such problems. Thus, the set of features I explained in each comment is based on the way that I see a particular type of problem being solved with the help of Chess.

In this way I hope to move you, a little at a time, from understanding Chess to
the point where the Chess mindset becomes your native tongue. Throughout, I’ll be taking the attitude that you want to build a model in your head that allows you to understand the Chess language all the way down to the bare metal (not B00bs); if you encounter a puzzle, you’ll be able to feed it to your model and deduce the answer. I will try to convey to you the insights that have rearranged my brain to make me start “thinking in (Real) Chess.”

I am bored with Chess. I want to quit now, and move on to more active sports involving more human interactions than just making dumb static moves. I know, some people consider Chess players as smarter, but it's not Rocket Science, and besides you are not making any contributions to the human race by playing Chess. There is life beyond the 64 squares, which is much more entertaining and challenging. The general rule that "practise makes you perfect" does not applies to Chess play and an average player will always remains average without any vertical growth in terms of his ratings unlike other sports. Chess is a passive game, and I am tired of making mental calculations game after game, with no future in sight.

I would better save Chess for my older days laden with passive social life, when I have nothing else to do except to wait for eventual mate/death.

 I'll alert the media.

@manavendra
you should really read the Art of Learning a book by Josh Waitzkin. I am sorry I mention him a lot right now but I have just read this book. maybe this book can give you the answer to what you want. It is not a chess book, it is a book about learning in general and to deal with tournament psychology. How to make chess and life go hand  in hand.

however I doubt that you ever will be able to read a position like you read a page in a book.

but I believe that every position is governed by principles that apply to virtually every position.

you just need to find the right principles to follow.

one simple principle "never take out your queen to early"

and each principle that is violated will be punished.

if your opponent move the queen more than once in the opening - there must be a way to punish your opponent.

I believe GM Dzindzichashvili said that.

But looking only at principles—and strengthened connections between Chess pieces—may not be enough to explain Chess. The great secret of Chess is that it mostly encodes the relationships between pieces more than the details of the pieces themselves. When you memorize an opening, you encode the relationships between the pieces, not the pieces per se, which is why you can easily play the game in a different key.

Avatar of manavendra

To understand chess principles you have to understand two things: #1 - that you have a TRUE principle that perfectly represents your strength of play, and #2 - that that TRUE principles will never be known and so we have to use statistics to get as close as possible to the truth.

You may be jumping the gun with quitting now.

Try playing for a few more months, establishing a lot of friends, then announcing that "you have to leave," then arrange a long and public tearful goodbye with cyber hugs and everything, then wave from the caboose as the train pulls away from the station, then return shortly thereafter with a very similar nick and explanation for how it's okay for you to be here now.

You can then repeat the whole thing, believe it or not. Just be patient, young spider.

Who in the world would this be I wonder ?! Wink
