I am done trying to become a Grand Master.

Hi, I had a dream of becoming a chess Grand Master but honestly who cares because engines are always gonna be better than human brains and chess might even be solved in a few years. Also, chess is so stupid once you're good. Its not about being smart or creative anymore, its about seeing tactics. If anyone higher rated than me can convince me that it gets better once you're out of my rating range, I encourage you to.

"I had a dream of becoming a chess Grand Master" ++ being a grandmaster is nothing great by itself, it is just a recognition of being excellent at chess. You can aspire to become better than you are now. You might even become CM, FM, IM, GM but you probably will not.

"engines are always gonna be better than human brains" ++ Yes and cars drive faster than people can run and yet we sill hold olympic games with athletes competing

"chess might even be solved in a few years" ++ Not before the end of this century

"Also, chess is so stupid once you're good." ++ Kramnik can be said to be good and he found chess still very rich.

"Its not about being smart or creative anymore, its about seeing tactics." ++ No, when you are good it is about strategy and endgames.

After playing here more than 10.000 bullet and blitz games and just 50 rapid ones, your brains are already fried, and whatever hope of becoming a strong player is gone.

Which way you "tried to become a grandmaster"? A friend of mine tried to be an astronaut and bought a drone, but unfortunately it did not work...

I teach kids for a living, and what this profession has taught me is that being a player and being a coach are two completely different outcomes in terms of what value you get. The experiences brought out depend on what your goals are. I never had it in me to becoming a GM either, but I always found value in offering my knowledge to those who can benefit from my teaching experience.

Chess has a lot of other values to teach apart from achieving a title (GM, IM, FM). It taught me how to become a better communicator and build a career around something I'm very passionate about.

your views on chess are exactly why you can't make grandmaster, and look, 99% of the world are in the same boat as you. Just relax and enjoy the game, and if you feel your wasting time, then move on, it was your decision to play chess.

Pretty insightful. I played putt putt golf once, didn't do very well, so gave up on trying to make the LPGA tour.

The fact that you can even say something like this shows that you've made 0 real attempt in trying to become even a strong player, let alone a GM.

Playing blitz & bullet is obviously not even close to what would be considered an attempt in trying to become a GM

A computer can calculate the winner of any game with perfect play from any position.

But what is "perfect" play? Is it accounting for human error, or a forced sequence of moves, or?

Almost none of us are ever going to Grandmasters, so forget about it.

The thing that inspires me is to play just a bit better than I did before, and you only know that by your rating.  Not that ratings are anything to boast about, but they tell you how you're getting on.

I just hit 1700 for the first time and that tells me that I'm playing better than I was a month or two ago.  Now I want to keep moving forward and aim for 1800.  Whether I shall ever do it, I don't know, but as someone once said, "It is better to travel in hope than to arrive."

AunTheKnight

You've only played bullet and blitz. No wonder.

If all you think chess is about is tactics then you're wrong. Period.
