I can't improve, should I give up and just play for fun?

I just can't seem to improve my game enough to ever play otb in a tournament which was my goal. Is my play simply to weak to ever hope for? I don't mind playing for just fun and that has its merits. How strong should you be able to play before attempting a tournament?
Dear Sololevelingsirjohn,
I'm a certified, full-time chess coach, so I hope I can help you. In my opinion, everyone can continue to improve, and so can you if you practice properly (and you can go to a tournament even if you are a beginner, there are unrated groups in many tournaments, so you can play against players at beginner level). Everybody is different, so that's why there isn't only one given way to learn and improve.
First of all, you have to discover your biggest weaknesses in the game and start working on them. The most effective way for that is analyzing your own games. There is a built-in engine on chess.com which can show you if a move is good or bad but the only problem is that it can't explain to you the plans, ideas behind the moves, so you won't know why it is so good or bad.
In my opinion, chess has 4 main territories (openings, strategies, tactics/combinations and endgames) and if you want to improve efficiently, you should improve all of these skills almost at the same time. That's what my training program is based on. My students like this method and they improve fast, as you can see from their feedback: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-lessons/feedbacks-from-my-services . Of course, there are always ups and downs but this is completely normal in everyone's career.
If you would like to learn more about chess, you can take private lessons from me (you find the details on my profile) or you can visit my Patreon channel (www.patreon.com/Bgabor91), where you can learn about every kind of topics (openings, strategies, tactics, endgames, game analysis). There are more than 19 hours of educational videos uploaded already and I'm planning to upload at least 4 new videos per week, so you can get 4-6 hours of educational contents every month. I also upload daily puzzles in 4 levels every day which are available with a FREE subscription.
I hope this is helpful for you. Good luck with your games!

Tbh, most people ain't here to play bec they want to be the best, they play bec they want to have fun and have no one to play with irl. I played with some people here using AI lol. If you do become the best, there will be better, you just never met them yet. I've seen 140 play as well as chess masters (they might have just started using chess.com, like me) So you can play as long as you are confident and happy to play.(sorry if its a little much)

There's a quote that I really like to think about when I also feel like it's pointless and that I'm not improving: "If you truly want to improve at something, you will."
Goes to show that if you give your best every match and actively strive to become better, there's absolutely no way you won't improve. It may take time, but never give up!
I have the same goal as you that i want to play otb in the future, my self made rule to be able to participate in an otb is a minimum of rating 2000 on chess.com, because in my country there's no fide tournament, so I have to travel to other country and it's expensive for me.

I think it's not his first account. Cause if he got from complete beginner to 1000 elo in 8 days, we have a new Capablanca among us.

Don't make new accounts, study theory, watch GM's play and gain tactics beyond your opening. Keep at it and you can only get better ! good luck

If you find a friendly tournament with a small or no admission fee, just join! Even if you lose, you will have fun, and meet other chess enthusiast who will be able to give you advice on chess.
