The reason is that the premise of Chess960 - that mainstream chess is too predictable and players rely on memorising openings rather than thinking on the spot - is, in my view, not correct. If this really was the case, then every game could be determined in advance and every game would end in a draw - but that isn't the case. In fact new positions and variants are being discovered all the time.
I feel that there remains so much still to be discovered about Chess, and to deny this seems rather philistine.
