I don’t understand how I “win” sometimes after a timeout when I’m clearly behind in pieces?

I’ve had a couple of matches where I’m down a piece but we may have the same amount of pawns. The game runs out of time (10 min usually) and the game gives me a win?

Do I just not understand the rules or is this a chess.com thing?

Thanks in advance for the gouge.

When your time runs out you always lose, unless your opponent does not have enough material to force checkmate, in which case the game results in a draw.

Whoever runs out of time loses.

Unless the other side doesnt have enough material for a checkmate, in which case it will be a draw instead.
