I don't understand how people with below-1000 ratings after hundreds of games...just don't quit ches

What really upset me is the mindset that just because some isn't good at something, they should quit.

incorrect.

Let me exaggerate for effect here.  Say someone dedicates their entire life to chess, playing 600,000 games throughout their life and reading book after book after book......turns out their rating is 1100.  Clearly, something is up with that.

I don't understand why the OP hasn't corrected his spelling of CHESS in the title of this thread !

wanmokewan

The thing you're not understanding is what if they don't CARE if they improve?

Who cares if "You keep striking a guitar with  bad rhythm for 10 years"

Who cares if "You keep playing chess with bad move for 10 years".

It doesn't matter for your pleasure!!

It matters if it is your job!!

such a bright conclusion you made there - that everybody here actually STUDIES chess. most people dont study chess: we play for FUN!! 😀

This makes sense.  Internet communication makes it extremely hard to decipher tone of voice and intention.  I took it too harshly and I apologize to you OP.

oh wow. what does he have on you, i wonder...

It is because many players play for fun. And their definition of "fun" is to play a lot of games and not have to do the hard work to get better.

This is fine--i have no problem with this.

Since folks are rated on this site, they get matched with similar-strength opponents.  So does it really matter what the ratings are?  Let me put it this way, instead of sub-1000, how about sub-2000?  Why would a sub-2000 rated player keep playing since they are no more than amateurs anyway.

1000 does not necessarily mean that you are unfamiliar with the basics of the game. it really depends what time control you're talking about here. With bullet or 3 minute blitz, blunders are common. I have played numerous 3 minute games with other 950 players where neither of us blundered, both played fairly well according to the post game analysis, neither was ahead in material, and we played to an endgame with either draw or win. I've been amazed how hard it has been to reach 1000 with 3 minute games, people even in the 900s often play better than you would expect. if you check their profiles, the rapid and daily ratings are a lot higher. Mine is around 1500 for daily, but not yet 1000 for 3 minute blitz... I have a very good score in thousands of tactic puzzles though. It's completely false to compare 1000 blitz against 1000 rapid or daily.

Lets point one thing: year 2014, i did start around 500 at blitz and 600 at rapid and even so i did get to 1600s~ now.

btw i played around 2000+ games at sub-1000 rating, its just that sometimes i feel like improving a little, and so i jump 100~200 in rating and stay at this level for a while, until i feel like trying a bit harder again.(i probably will be around 1700~1800 at the end of the year)

It`s like golfers who can`t break 100. They still enjoy playing whether they work on their game or not regardless of whatever inborn abilities they may have. Some may have limited potential--simple as that. Some Chess players just play blitz on this site and they simply suck at speed Chess. I`m not particularly good at speed Chess whether on this site or face to face as in my club. Nevertheless, I am over 2000 rated on the ICCF and USCF and maybe those who are very low rated should try much slower time controls as in turn based events which are de facto correspondence games and get a higher rating. By doing so they also learn more from those games, especially the losses. I would also suggest getting involved in vote Chess to learn more about proper Chess thinking.

There are the following scenarios:

  • a 900 player who studied and played chess for years but does it for fun or to meet his friends online or in a chess club or enjoys and helping the chess club and chess community -> in this case the rating doesn't matter
  • a 900 player studies and plays chess for years with the intention to get better and improve his rating -> in this case I think this person should think about whether this is a good way to spend your time with because you should spend your time wisely. If you still blunder a queen in one move or falling for one-move-mate threats then this game is not for you.

Note that I said that player should think about it. In the end it is still his/her decision how they spend their time.
