The illegality is key and as an allegory I always use warfare.
If that square is covered by a sniper, even if the sniper is covered himself you would not ride your king through that position.

Should this proposed rule be allowed? What are the implications for engines, tournaments, and overall endgame techniques? Does this present a whole new slew of tactics? I wanted to consult the community to see if anyone has noticed this before.

The rules are the rules. Don’t mess with the finer stuff, what makes the game great is that everyone knows (and follows) the exact same principles.
Otherwise we would all be masters at Cribbage ;)
