I hate Gloaters

I mostly play in the 1000-1300 score range for a quick break from work. I have recently come across 'gloaters' who comment on topics ranging from how poor my game, that i should stop playing, to how sad my family life and upbringing must have been (???) - espically when they win or are going to win.

The game of chess was meant to be respectful and there must not be any gloating or commenting. I dont understand why such people have to pass comments like this- its not like they are chess champions or gurus. It really leaves me with a bad taste.

Has this been discussed here before? What do you guys think?

What is wrong with people today. Why should I gloat? What about sportsmanship and humilty?

Gloaters deserve a big kick on their ass. Only the cheapest kind of people gloat; and the same applies to those who think gloating is okay when you are winning.... Don't worry about such assholes, but you don't need to be polite to such people either. Pay them back in their own coin.

Wow. I guess this chess community is full of gloaters like you who are more concerned about counting their score than playing the game. Thanks for bringing that to my notice - I used to play to take a break from work , not to count a chess score - I have better things to count in my life.

Do they like you?

NishanDas, in a book called "The Four Agreements" one of the four things is to Take Nothing Personal.  Easier said than done sometimes but good advice.

Gloaters and worse seem to particularly infest the blitz crowd and it is almost amusing when you step back and consider what pathetic and sorry individuals must be who rely on insulting people after their puny little victories to get their rocks off.  Be glad you aren't that kind of person yourself and keep the kind of perspective it takes to realize that what they are doing is giving you a fix on how much further along the evolutionary ladder you've come than they :)

Thanks doppelgangsterII. I really appreitate your advise. In the begining I too found it funny but somewhere along the line I got upset and today I just came across a horrible person who started talking about my family - I now feel that he was just talking about his own family problems and this was the way he was dealing with it.

I really like your perspective and will keep that in mind next time I come across a gloater.

Thanks!

And I'll try getting my hands on that book you mentioned!  :)

LousyChess

I often find this mostly in Blitz players.  They are often younger and very immature.  I have been subject to a great amount of foul language, insults and soforth.  Dont take it personal! GG BTW

Nyeah

I was playing a game against someone (rated below me) who had some serious opening moves (probably practised out of a trick playbook). He took one rook for free and was about to get the other one. He commented "You are going to lose". Rather than trade off several of my pieces, I moved my queen out of his way. He took the rook and I check mated him. That is where I got the "looser" comment on my board. I wear it like a medal.

Gyryth

Just  block them. Life is too precious to ever have to see them again.

JesusLovesTheAcid

Hates gloaters and bangs on about being respectful but disconnects when losing.

You know, I actually had something similar happen to me. Now I will admit I play 10 minute blitz games, and my rating is usually between 525 and 625 (it fluctuates). I actually had someone who was playing me say "Ha ha loser" (but they spelled it looser), and then turned off the chat.

Simple solution...Don't read after their first post or simply block,
