That's why, when you want to give someone the impression you're good at something, the best strategy is to tell them you practice often, but you're not very good. Intuitively people are aware of:

(Although this strategy may not work with kids, who don't know anything yet )

Well maybe it's because i am big kid but if someone tells me that i will assume this person is so terrible he does not even want to lie about it (does that make sense, didn't check) or simply practicing a lot but still at low level? sounds like a patzer to me.

To the O.P - it's kids man, lie, have fun , tell them they are really strong, make them happy or simply punish them, some really deserve it.

I guess it depends on the context and the way they say it. If they say they're no good like they're ashamed, then yeah, they probably suck.

Anyway, if someone told you "I'm really good at chess" wouldn't you think you're better than them? I don't think a good player would talk that way, at least they'd mention their rating.

saying something like that about kids proves age doesn't bring humility.

When I worked at a chess camp on a college campus, we had some kids who were barely out of diapers, but played damn good chess.  We had a guy drop by who said he played serious chess and wanted a game.  We set him up with an eight year old.  He was offended, and wanted someone older.  We convinced him to give the kid a break.  20 moves in he resigned.

4 years ago I got beat hard by some 11-year-old girl who looked even younger than that. She threw all her pieces at my king and ended with a rook sacrifice to mate me in 17 moves. I was already 2000+ back then, but a difference is that I took her seriously from the start.

THERE ARE ALWAYS KIDS WHO COME UP TO ME AND SAY THEY ARE REALLY GOOD AT CHESS BUT THEY THINK PAWNS CAN MOVE BACKWARDS, CASTLING IS ILLEGAL, AND EN PASSANT IS ILLEGAL. THEY  BRING OUT THEIR ROOKS BY H4 AND A4 AND THEY SPEND 2 MINUTES ON EVERY MOVE INCLUDING THE FIRST MOVE.

You should stop feeding the children, that'll teach em.

It's because every kid is told they are special, and the kid who comes in last place still gets a medal, and critizing a child is considered child abuse.

They are kids after all

True.Even worse are noobs who think giving a check is a huge acheivement and lasting for more than 10 moves is a big deal.Retards.

I agree I went to this tournament and these kids were talking during a game it was a rapid tournament and then they think checking is so good so then they yell check really loud and think they're so good

Yea, I think most of us have met annoying kids like that. It's ok though because you can play and beat them to see them cry.

I couldn't understand the question.
