I hate the chess.com time controls

If you want to play with an increment it goes from 15/10 (that's really too fast for me to play a good game) to 45/45.  That's a HUGE gap.  I know, I know, I know, I can set a custom time control.  I used to routinely get great games at 30/10 for many years, but now I just can't even get a game around that time control.  Two possible solutions:

1.  Create another default setting between those two times from the drop down selections.

2.  Make the custom seek graph always visible when you first go to Live Chess.  Right now it's there, but it's hidden.

I feel pretty strong about this.  I've been a member here for a long time and I'm just not having fun at 15/10 or  45/45.

There's a preset 30min button & I can see that you already know about pressing/ clicking on the 'Custom' button to set 30|10 or any time control you like.

If there is currently nobody else seeking that time control you can send the challenge to a like minded friend/ opponent, I think it helps if you're both in Live at the same time, & yes it would be good to have a preset 30|10 button wink.pngnull

Hi,

Like Jurassikmark, I try to find opponents for a 30 I10 game and I must wait for a very long time to find somebody. And sometimes there is none.

A preset 30 I10 button should be a good idea ! Wink

Custom is available for people like you who aren't satisfied with the 14 current standard chess time controls.

Or the variants.  And unrated!

People already come on here complaining that it takes too long to get a game in any of the variants.

Adding more buttons just means that people who choose choices #10-#14 will have to wait that much longer.

Why are there so many fast time controls, anyway? Cut out some of those, add in 30 10 or whatever.

I think time control is a wise to use. As far as I know it's used everywhere including offline chess games.

The best chance is probably to play players of any rating, although I am doubtful that the 30|10 time control is popular as of today, Even 10|5 time control (which I regularly use against my one of my friends on Chess.com alonsgide 3|0) is not widely popular.

I strongly agree.  30 I10 would suit me much better than the current standard choices.

Apparently I can't quote anybody in V3.  To summarize a popular response to the original post is that adding another time control will just make the problem worse.  I agree, but let's break that down.  If you login to chess.com on a PC, and you hover over the "Play" icon, the longest time control available is 30/0.  I suppose most people know that you get both more and fewer options if you (non intuitively) select Live Chess.  Now 30/0 is gone, but you have the "more" option and this allows you to finally see all of the non custom time controls.  Is it possible that this is one of the reasons that some of the longer controls are not played as much?  OK, let's say that everybody knows their way around Live Chess and I'm complaining for no reason.  It was a titled player a few years ago that created a thread asking for a longer time control.  The thread was extremely popular and hundreds of chess.com members agreed that adding a longer time control was an excellent idea.  45/45 was one of the suggestions along with 30/30, I believe.  I was crossing my fingers that they would not choose 45/45 as it would ultimately not be as popular as something less drastic from what already existed.  So, to make a long story short, if removing a non-popular time control to give something in-between 15/10 and 45/45 a chance, then I'm all for it.  I think others would be for this as well.  Surely a lot of people who play 30/0 would prefer 30/10 if they had the chance.

Also, what nobody addressed prior to this is my statement that I used to almost ALWAYS get a 30/10 game for years in the past by selecting a custom time control.  Did all of those players just disappear, or is it because the seek graph is hard to find in V3?

If you are waiting a long time for a 30/10 game it is because NO ONE online wants to play that time control except of course you.

A 40 move game would flag at 36:40 and every 10 moves after that would add 1:40 seconds.

Unless your connection is poor why not just play G30?

Seek graph isn't hard to find in v3. You just click the Open Challenges option. It's the second option/button in the Live chess panel, below the main Play section.

Then how do explain post #15?

I gave one possible explanation why I could almost always get a 30/10 game for YEARS.  I'm sorry, but you gave no explanations.

I really don't know for sure but it could just be the fact that the Seek graph is not on the main screen anymore by default. In v2, that is the main thing in front of people and no one has to go looking for it. Knowing human nature, that would explain most of it since most people probably just click their favorite time control and hit play now, they don't even look for the graph.

this reminds me of the time when i was driving on the road

and i saw the driver in front of me throw a whole of bucket of Popeye's fried chicken out of the window

an hour later i drove back on the same road and all the chicken was gone!

i wonder where that chicken walked off too ?

I agree that this is a real possibility.  So, perhaps chess.com could put the Seek graph back on the main screen.  I will create a suggestions thread.

You don't look like you eat much Popeye's fried chicken.
