My 21-month-old son has discovered the world of chess. I think probably because I had my marble & onyx chess set & board on the dining room table for a long time since I don't have a decent box to put it in, and of course he always saw it there and wanted to play with it. He would point to it and say "chess." So after letting him play with it a few times, I put it away and now let him play with my folding wooden set. He will go into the living room, point up to the shelf where it's stored and say "chess." So I'll take it off the shelf, and it's fun to see him cackle and grin as I put it on the floor and open it up.
So far he knows what the knights and rooks are. He loves the knights. He'll take all four of them out and say, "knight." I'll ask him to show me a rook and he'll point them out. I had all the pieces set up at the starting position and asked him to show me the rooks, and he pointed to all four of them. He's starting to learn what the kings are. He won't call them by name but he'll set both kings together. He kind of knows what the other pieces are and even has called them by name, but that's something we'll have to work on.
His birthday and Christmas are coming up soon, so I think I'm going to have to get him his own set, maybe one with large plastic pieces that will be easier for him to play with and not lose.
