I have an answer..And I know I'm right.

The same tired old question seems to pop up from new players on here, and I think I have finally answered it ......."How do I improve?" That question comes in every different way, from blitz to otb to every person on here that COULD help. There are so many opinions on this, however I think what has worked for me and what makes sense to me is why limit yourself?  If you are serious about improving, why not improve everything? So take for example, one day you only study openings, then pick one and study that. Then why not study up on tactics as well? Why the big debate? One strategy is not really better...Then have one day set aside and study end games, and one day to study up on your losses. So then you perhaps have one day set aside to study the chess masters..Repeat this and rotate the days, how can you not improve? Each person that plays chess and is above 1200 on here, will have different opinions, and thats confusing, but I think you can do everything. Hope that helps someone else...Good luck everyone!

You read the post, so I have to say that you are noone. I will not charge for my brilliance, you are welcome.

I completely agree with you OP! In fact, your post reminds me of this thread that I created a while ago:

I guess great minds think alike!

As someone who has apparently never had an unposted thought, I can't exactly pile on here, can I ?  Embarassed Smile  Certainly understand the exhilaration that comes from having, what for you, is a life changing realization.  OP needs to become a better writer though or sadly; the posts go largely unread or summarily dismissed.  Forums can be a tough crowd...Laughing

Time to calibrate your troll detector.

The OP is correct I feel.  For me, it is about how I feel in the moment.  As he says, working a bit on each part is important.  You have to work some openings as you get a little better (above 1200) so that you can avoid simple traps and maybe set a couple yourself.  Otherwise, tactics are extremely important to not miss them.  Also studying endgames so you know how to win in that rook ending.  You need to study master games to get a feel for an entire game being played out, with advice on each move and even challenge yourself by guessing the next move.  In addition to all these, going over your own losses and analyzing first on your own and then with a computer or master will help realize where you are going wrong.  All these are important.

The OP suggests rotating through the different types of study, but in my opinion, the best way would be to change it up randomly, forcing your mind to adapt and adjust to what you are doing.  It is like studying for an exam.  If you go through the same questions in the same order over and over, you might get thrown off by a change in order or wording and your memorization would falter.  Yet if you force yourself to go through the questions in random orders, you will better understand each one and not rely on just the memorization.

Love the idiots who say that nobody reads my posts, when they have obviously read it, ironic and funny at the same time. I dont think forums are tough at all, they tend to attract the traditional trolls that I expect, but If just 1 struggling chess player whos kinda new to the game here-like myself- finds this post helpful, then no thanks are required. Cool You are indeed welcome....

I'm a struggling chess player and found this this thread very useful.

But I also struggle with many things like fly zipper pants. I switched to wearing jogging pants to work, but not before I lopped off my weiner in the jagged jaws of death
