I know chess like a GM

Do you remember that famous sentence from the movie Matrix when Neo after being programmed for several hours opens his eyes and says to Morpheus: "I know kung fu."  If it were me, I would've asked if they could also throw in some chess  database information from let's say... the latest Rybka edition or so. Aaah, imagine no more hard studying and solving numerous puzzles in order to increase your rating for a few points. And to finally understand 12. Bd3 in Sicilian Dragon/Classical/Zollner/Spielman variation... It would be great to shout (after my brain being programmed for few minutes): "I know chess like a Grandmaster!" Hey, but who knows what future brings us - today it's the first African American president and tomorrow man on Jupiter...

That would be a very sad day for chess, and for me...

Well... that would certainly break out the fun of chess; to know chess in the same manor as a computer is simply -> breaking through millions(much more) moves in each position;

There would be no creativity... and probably no fun either.

And either way would you like to know w/o ... there would be no skill, no develeopment.... that would just suck...

i think it would be niceto finaly get what chess is about, it doesn't mean you have to solve it, since it isn't really possible, it would be like reading a chess book really fast, i think i would like it...

about man on Jupiter, i hardly think there would be a Jupiter walk... more like a fizz :)

But wouldn't you like to understand the secrets and depths of chess at least for a day, to be inside GM's mind, just picture all those doors you will probably never be able to open otherwise. I agree that the fun of learning would be diminished but you've got to admit, it is a bit intriguing...

I  must disagree with you slipslap. It's quite the opposite; skill and development would be brought to another level, because everyman's creativity would then participate in  limitless chess development from another starting positions. It would push chess theory light years further from where it stands now...

Is there some kind of championship, where players have the right to use chess engines?

I imagine a game during which players will be using the same computer chess engine. Then, intuition and character will be playing a much more important role or else, it will be a dead draw.

Lasker had mentioned that character is a big factor in a game of chess. Using machines we can eliminate the calculation needs and let the human traits shine.

Of course, having an opponent "out calculated" or destroied by tactical means, is of extreme pleasure too :)

Well, Grandmasters worked very hardly to reach their level of knowledge, understanding and calculation. I just can't deserve such feeling unless I work intensely for many, many years. Since I haven't worked, studied and etc., I certainly must appreciate others who gave their lives to chess. If someday I could learn / know chess like in "The Matrix" (even for a second), that will be the day when I shall no longer feel any noble feeling for this game. Anyway, I guess it could also be seen as a lack of respect and a worship of science / technology, instead of the dedication to a great passion.

As stated above, I don't think knowing everything about chess would make it amazing. Our human mind works on creating new ideas and networks by itself and to have some huge database just plugged into it would ruin the whole human process of understanding and taking things apart. We are made in a way that we get enjoyment out of figuring out problems, like chess. When I play chess I don't play statically like a computer but I create my own combinations and try to bend the rules a bit.

On the other hand, if we could put ourselves into a simulated reality, such as The Matrix, it could be possible to program our minds to such an extent that we would understand all of chess and the whole universe as a whole. Interesting idea though.

It would be the death of chess. Who would watch after that?
