So if you run out of time is it the best ranked player who wins because last game I played he had 2 pawns I had 2 pawns a bishop and knight and queen so I was well in front I'm quite confused

If you run out of time then you lose except if your opponent doesn’t have enough material to mate you no matter what they do in the case you do perfect play then it’s a draw

If your time runs out, you lose.
Maybe you haven't noticed that both players have their own clock?

#10 simple. If you run out of time, it's the same as you get checkmated (except if your opponent didn't have enough material to checkmate). It doesn't matter if you started or not.

Loss by adandonment means loss by not playing the game or loss on time is self explanatory
