So I was playing a blitz chess game and he was beating me, but I was hoping to win on time. he had 4 pawns and a king and I had just a king. he ran out of time and it was a draw because "timeout with insufficient material" given the time he could have easily promoted to a queen, so how did he have insufficient material?
Because he ran out of time, but you had insufficient material. The message after the game actually refers to both you and your opponent, separately.
you cannot win on time if you only have a bare king
