I managed to beat Apple Chess
Sjeng 3.18 has a rating of 2750 elo. However, Apple Chess 3.18 tends to make quite a number of blunders even on advanced settings like 4 seconds per move and 8 seconds per move. On 8 seconds per move, it feels like I am playing against a 1550 rated opponent.
Here are my elo calculations:
1 move ahead - 250 elo
2 moves ahead - 500 elo
3 moves ahead - 850 elo
1 second per move - 1000 elo
2 seconds per move - 1100 to 1200 elo
4 seconds per move- 1400- 1550 elo
8 seconds per move - 1600 elo
16 seconds per move - 1700 elo to 2000 elo
32 seconds per move - 2000 to 2200 elo
64 seconds per move - 2400 to 2600 elo
128 seconds per move - 2750 to 2900 elo
256 seconds per move - 3200 elo
These rating calculations were created since the difficulty slider does not give an exact rating of how the computer plays. The difficulty can be set from faster where the computer would make blunders to stronger where the computer is given more time to think and would play better moves.
I don't think so. On M4 iMac, the 1 move ahead is much stronger than 250. I think it's at least 1000. Maybe if someone has the time, they can have it play against stockfish.
Mac Chess Version 3p18 - I'm no chess master, but I just lost to 1 move ahead and they are definitely not 250 Elo. I analyzed the game on Lichess and the computer had 3 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes, 0 blunders, 17 average centipawn loss, 95% accuracy.
I just played the Mac Chess computer versus the 2000 rated Chesscom engine (Komodo16), and it won handily. 90p8 accuracy with 1 great move, 1 inaccuracy, 1 mistake, 1 miss, and 0 blunders, versus 78p4 accuracy with 0 great moves, 3 inaccuracies, 4 mistakes, 0 misses, and 0 blunders for the engine. The worst evaluation it got was in the opening, but then it dominated for most of the game.
In conclusion, the easiest setting, 1-move-ahead, for Mac Chess 3p18 is better than the 2000 rated Chesscom Komodo16 engine.
