I need a coach? Anyone up?

Oh wow. In my case, I played 45 minutes each side every day. I did not solve puzzles. I did not know where and what to get puzzle books. I picked some opening lines what the computer played. Chessmaster 2 Playstation 1 no matter what rating it played main lines; and starts to think after it's book. I can say the long game playing and knowing the main lines in different openings helped me a lot.

I never had a chess coach. I did not have money to hire and guide me. I did not buy the Playstation console somebody gave it to us..

In the program every legendary GM has an AI. It was stated there Capablanca never had a day without playing a single game of chess. My dad was a fan of Capablanca. So I imitated the GM with that playing aspect. But against the computer. happy Wohoo! tongue

y'all are so mean, that's sad... The person is just trying to be a better player. hope he finds a coach

Not being mean here. Just stating a fact: you can't be higher than 100 ELO if you don't pick up a book and read. 100 Elo basically means this person only knows how to move the pieces... and barely. Can't see threats in one move, etc. A "coach" is not the solution here. A "teacher" perhaps, but not a coach. I pointed out a good first book to read: Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals. After that book, perhaps Nimzowitsch's My System.

ulfbert

And for those that claim "just play"... that's not helpful when one barely knows how to move the pieces. I'm telling you: the only solution to at least get above 1000 is to read some GOOD beginner's books, like the classics. Capablanca, Nimzowitsch, Lasker, Tarrasch, etc. THEN you can play a lot of games to apply what you've learned. Simply playing... won't do it, because you're not applying anything new, you're just running in circles.

ulfbert

If you're smart, you'll compare what every higher-rated player tells you with what lower-rated players tell you. Higher-rated players tell you to read books and study. Lower-rated players tell you to play, to hire a coach, to watch lots of online videos, follow a streamer, etc. Even when you ask for book recommendations, normally lower-rated players name bad books that they've read because it's the only ones they know, while higher-rated players will tell you exactly which ones to spend your time at your level now.

Well, did you see Jennifer Yu's advice to beginners. She said, "just play". Karpov, read My Best Games, he said he never had a chess book until he was Fide Master. He just played a lot of classical games.. His first book was an endgame book in Russian language.

ulfbert

Well.... she's truly an exception, you would agree I'm sure.

Imagine if you wanted to be a medical doctor and people kept telling you "well, just operate... you'll learn by doing". That's not how you learn chess and certainly not how you improve beyond a certain level.

But that is Jennifer's Yu exact words to the beginners, "Just play". Not to herself. Beginners will just simply hang their pieces almost all the time. Lots of mate in 1 and mate in 2 first is more appropriate. Then mate in 3. Capablanca's Fundamentals the book that you recommended or Chernev Logical Chess. Nor Stean Simple Chess (very hard book actually) they will not understand it..

Can somebody please tag Jennifer Yu's account. I heard it in my very own ears and seen it with my very own eyes that she said it via live podcast, whatever you call it webcam meeting.

In my own experience when I was a beginner, I just played. No coaches. No books. Until I naturally learn not to give away my pieces. Later learned some openings by copying the AI and chess club players. Learned to simple checkmate. Learn most basic endgames. No strategy. The good thing is I only played long games. No blitzing.

I personally see a lot of beginners today with coaches. Have chess books. Struggle to move up. I think I know why because they play blitz all the time.

It's funny how chillimao himself coaches students but doesn't want curry to coach.

@Hayleyrules12345

If you want to post one game here that you think is representative of your play I'll go through it and do an analysis and commentary. It may take me a couple of days to get it done, as I'll be doing it in my spare time.

I'd pick maybe a longer game, a game where you've had plenty of time to think (maybe daily) and one where you lost.

@daddy_chillimao go and see how infrequently I play blitz lmao I’ve spoken before on why I don’t play the short format games so much (basically it doesn’t mesh particularly well with the way my brain and it’s neurodivergencies work). I’m currently playing bullet again to challenge myself and my brain but am facing the same challenges.

Please judge me only on my rapid or my OTB rating.

With that in mind, and with absolutely no offence intended, please don’t deem to tell other site users whether they are competent enough to coach (especially if you are lower rated than them). Let our potential students make that judgement for themselves. I have several paid students who (I’m sure) could attest the quality of my services.

There are many GM coaches who will teach you for free. You'll find them in your public library...
