I feel like I suck at chess sad.png

Does anyone have any suggestions to help me?  My style is hyper aggressive, but I can quickly change up to hyper defensive.  I play Queen Pawn and usually a reversed gruenfeld or catalan.  As black, I play the scandinavian GAMBIT with c6 instead of immediately taking with the queen (or e6 for the icelandic gambit).

Thanks for you advice...if anyone decides to comment.  Much appreciated.  Hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

Most people would say that an 1800 blitz rating does not "suck".

You just replied to someone else's forum post with almost the exact same title and gave them advice for improvement

Yessir I did.  But I am at a higher level than they were.  So I need advice from some strong players, like yourself happy.png

As soon as i see this, I just walk away.

Grandmaster Kasparov said that you must be ready to change up very quickly to defense, if your attack goes NOT work.  Thank you for your comment, sir.

Once you get to a certain strength there are diminishing returns and your wins may come from very small pieces of information. If you're serious about improving then you have to play strong opponents in long time controls and REALLY think about your moves. If you lose to the best of your ability then you ask why. This will at least give a direction to look at. This coupled with studying books like modern chess strategy by Ludek Pachman and Silman's endgame manual. This is the only real path forward. Countless hours of study. Countless frustrating losses.

The advice is not difficult.

Don't play blitz , play long time control games against better opponents(at least 200-300 points higher rated) and anlyse your games to find out the mistakes in your thinking.

This is the key for improvement. If you have some spare time then you should try  to study endgame and improve your endgame technique. The higher the rating the more important endgame technique becomes.

These are the most important steps for improvement.

I bet you know them already and I bet you are not going to do them. You hope that you will get some convenient answers like "play a lot of blitz and bullet" or "study more openings" and of course that is what you will do.

I have a USCF rating of 1824....I have had it since I was 14 years old.  I have played MANY long games.

You have to decide if you're willing to pay the price then pay it. It can be a steep price

I have read the amateur's mind by Silman...one of my favorite books.

Thank you for your advice, wish you the best.

If you are losing because of your opening change them; one of your thread you have 1.d4 and 2.Qd3, I think for beginners who don't know any better that is okay but you are 1800 uscf and you should set the example what should be correct play. What holds players back is unsoundness in their play, eliminate any unsound principles and you will improve.

Qd3 according to stockfish at highest depth is sound.  Only bad thing is it allows black to equalize, with proper play.

If your rating is stuck, then maybe you should change your opening.

Why are you suggesting he change his opening? You think changing his opening will cause his overall play to increase?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: If someone is stuck at a certain rating, then a change of opening will trigger other changes and help him get out of the rut.

I just looked at your game. Had to go back a week to find one game that was longer than 3 minutes so that's your first problem. In your most recent 15/10 loss you kept moving randomly without any real idea as to why. I think you moved your knight back and forth 3 times? Then you impulsively grabbed a pawn and missed a fork in 1. The blitz and bullet is making you impulsive and reinforcing bad habits.

I actually agree. Switching to a d4 opening can certainly cause you to think more positionally than tactically but none of it will help at bullet chess

Don't whine!

lol 😁 guys, "don't play blitz or bullet. Just play long games" is a very mediocre idea. Nobody improves just by playing long games(and avoiding blitz or bullet). Its crazy that so many people give suggestion to all chess players as if its cure all miracle medicine.

Do you still play long time control games?Do you analyse them?

Do you study endgame?

Or you lose your time with blitz?

Don't tell me that you don't know that blitz is a waste of time and if you don't spend 8 -10 hours a day for chess then it's a waste of time that you can't afford.

I have played 100s of long time control games since I was younger.  I reached 1824 tournament rating at age 14.  I agree with Magnus Carlsen that chess should move more towards faster time controls.

excellent advice, sir.  I will try to play some longer games and take my time.  Thank you for the advice and wish you the best.
