I Paid For No Ads Right?

I am a premium member! Why am I seeing ads?

Please note that all members will occasionally see relevant (chess-related) advertising on the Chess.com main page.

Premium members will not see ads on any other Chess.com pages.

So the "NO Ads" thing is a lie? I suppose chess.com does need other ways to make money.

I would take any of @Postafi's statements with a large measure of salt, as he consistently interprets - and not uncommonly misinterprets - the facts so as to present Chess.com in the worst possible light. Frankly, I don't know why he persists here if it is a bad as he says it is, but we tolerate his negativity as it's demonstrable evidence against his belief that the mods go around trolling members and altering contents of posts at will.

The most prominent ads are the ones that appear after every live chess game - premium membership removes those and from everywhere else on the site, except on the main page. Those are always from Chess.com and always about chess. Sometimes people also get PMs about Chess.com University. One could argue that those are announcements rather than ads and that the "NO Ads" statement could do with an astereisk next to it, but as I pointed out, there's an entry in the FAQ that people can also check to verify.

If you're unhappy with that, you can contact the Billing team via Support and ask for the renewal of your premium membership to be cancelled - I think they also refund you the balance of the current year's membership if that's what you really want to do.

Ah ok, so these announcements are given to everyone and are by chess.com?

Thanks for the explanation. I get it now .

I like Postafi. It's good to have him here.

Yes - I should also mention that the ads that are removed with premium membership are served to your computer by a third party provider based on your own browsing history: if an inappropriate ad shows up, please contact the Support team with a screenshot, and they're able to contact the ad provider and get that ad removed altogether.

Do you happen to know anything about that ad that redirects the device to a page that cannot be x'ed out asking for several questions to win a gift card. Its not malware. My dad has reset his phone numerous times because of the issue and upon reloading chess.com he sees the page pop up within a few games or so. He said he gets one every day. I do not have the issue because of premium membership.  Should my dad get an adblocker? Will that even stop the page redirect? It happens without clicking the ads. Click anywhere on the page and it will redirect. Even the exit page button.

How do you "know" it's not malware, because it's certainly behaving like malware: normal ads and apps don't prevent you from closing them like that. I'd do a Google search on the phrases used in the ad and see what that turns up.

Ok thanks.

MGleason

Yes, that certainly sounds like malware.

I know! I did that too!

If you're getting an adblocker, uBlock Origin is better: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm?hl=en

It's faster than Adblock and Adblock Plus.

Those look like nasty spam links lol. I will probably get the adblocker you recommended. Thanks!

Adblockers do not protect you from chess.com's (not so) hidden advertising:
