I really need to work on my game -- but I don't know how

It's the same story that repeats over and over again.

I play in a tournament. Get thrashed. Then I swear I will never play short time controls then relapse. Then the next tournament comes around and I get thrashed again. And so on repeat.

So then today I clicked on 'more' on chess live options and there is an option for 45|45 games. I was delighted. I clicked on it. I made my moves instantaneously invariably but my opponent made me sit there for eternities together. I just resigned after losing a pawn.

How can I become a better chess player if this keeps repeating itself.

I'd suggest 15/10 time control. If you are about to make a move quickly, check it over. Ask yourself questions. If I play this, what will my oppenent play? Is this a one move threat? What is my intended plan with this move? What will I probably play next? How is this improving my positioning? How is this worsening my oppenents position? If you ask yourself all these questions you will easily be spending way too much time on every move. You definetly wont be making quick moves.

Cool. I guess I do this at a subconscious level perhaps I need to be more methodical in my thinking.

Yes. Often we ask these questions subconciously, but if we think of them consciously we can get to the roots of our thought process.

You're not that bad. Just keep playing. (Hopefully you don't pay to play.)
