I SUCK at Chess

Anyone got any ideas on how I can improve my chess? All my tournament games I'm currently losing. I tend to miss tactics and miscalculate exchanges. No matter what I do, I never seem to be getting better.

Practice tactics every day.

Personally I use Chess Tempo, but Chess.com has a Tactics Trainer, and also there are books of tactical exercises.

That's my problem as well. I do the TT, and seem to be getting nowhere FAST.

I would recommend that you find someone who is definitely better than you, which is not hard at our sort of level, and get them to teach you for a bit. You could do this formally by looking for a chess coach, and paying for sessions, but you can also just try to find someone to give you a little time for free, informally. Many players are willing to do this. Is there a chess club you can go to?

But do this in real life. Don't try to do it all on the internet, or with chess programs, or even books.

Use other resources as well. Books on openings, middlegame and endings. Chess Mentor on the site. Computer Workout also on the site. Play against a chess engine like Shredder or Fritz. Keep playing against equal strength or more highly rated opponents.

But mostly Endings.

I've tried the tactics trainer and I'm fail at it. Anyway here's one of my games. You'll be able to see from it how crap I am at chess. . .

This is an online book that will do wonders for your game.  It explains Chess tactics in a easy to understand way.  Highly recommended!

I played chess several years ago for about two years, then I dropped it. Later, I began playing chess again. Since then, I have played chess for about 1-2 years. Anyway, here I played against Chessmaster, the strongest computer chess engine. I (obviously) lost the game.

No, it is not the strongest, it is one of the weakest :)

BTW, you're wrong about the position after the 7th move. After 7.Nxc6 bxc6 Black's center pawn is getting stronger, his weak d-pawn is no longer a problem for him. Actually I think 7.Nxc6 is a mistake. After 7...bxc6 I always win the Black side or lose the White side.

Yeah, I can see the idea behind it, but you need to have support behind those pawns, you cant just blindly push em and expect something to happen. You should listen to padman, because your "queenside attack" was completely unjustified in that position. All you actually did in that position was leave your d4 pawn to be gobbled up by the night and make a fresh target on c5, all in one move. Play against rybka or something, thats a good engine, chessmaster blows :-p

chessmaster is better at teaching beginners the fundamentals of chess though.  Too many people tell begining players to just study tactics, but then they don't understand piece value, or simple opening principals.  Beginning players need to learn fundamentals before they can study tactics, after you learn the fundamentals then you can start studying tactics, and endgames.  Then add in some strategy and opening training.

Yeah, you are right, I forgot hes a beginner, all playing a chess engine is gonna do is get you frustrated. The chess for dummies book is actually a pretty good read for beginners, it outlines the basic points of the game, phases and some simple tactical and positional ideas. It's good for getting started but nothing else really, but that's a dummies book for you...If you want to get deeper into the game you should read some of Silman's books, like How to Reassess Your Chess...

Avatar of jwhitesj

how to reassess your chess is to difficult for beginners too.  I would recomend a book like Seriwans "Play Winning Chess,"  Chessmaster is also an excellent learning tool for the beginning player.
