I'm new here, if you couldn't tell.
I've played chess against computers, and lose most of the time. According to my Chessmaster 2010 game, I'm rated at a solid 500. I want to learn. Is there any hope for me? Does anyone want to play? I know I can get better. I know I can.

Help me.

Of course you can get better!  Humans are a LOT more fun to play against than computers so just dive in and play a game.  And you're on the right track with trying to learn from the Chess Mentor.  Whole bunch of free courses that will get you off to a good start.  The Tactics Trainer here is pretty tough, but you can play it in unrated mode and even choose to play just puzzles you've already failed.  Best of luck and welcome to the Game!

Thanks baddogno! I've run threw a few of the tactics lessons, but I see the clock ticking and get nervous because I have no clue what I'm supposed to do. Is it supposed to be the best move possible according to the situation? I am not at that level to be able to read the board like that. I want too, but I just don't see it and it bugs me.

Especially the algo here, one can really take advantage of the same weird moves No normal chess beginner would do but the algo here on different levels does. Means playing against the computer here it can be really hard and not easy to win, nethertheless between two brilliant moves the computer luckily sacrifies pieces without advantage thereafter or marching against his pawns ... like a schizo player, brilliant in chess but dumb as rotten meat for a second.

Intimation is the sincerest form of flattery.

What helped me the most, initially, was playing Majestic Chess (a PC video game about chess) and reading Chess for Dummies book.  If you end up buying Majestic Chess, just an FYI, remember to use Windows compatibility mode (it's an old game).

If you are in the K-12 age group, then I'd also suggest checking out some scholastic chess clubs near you.  These clubs are better for learning than the normal chess clubs because they also teach in addition to chess play.

Sorry, been away for the holiday. I'm old. Pushing 50! I ain't worried about that. I just want to get better and be the best I can at this. Just to keep my antique mind active, if nothing else. Just for fun.

Don't worry about an antique mind, my mind has been banging around in there for 68 years now.

Ok, I'm playing. I'm sure I will blunder, but I will try.

Yes you are and thanks, if you blunder I just hope I notice it.

Nonsense, age is hardly a restriction, it's the want and needs that must remain as active and as determined as possible.
