If a queen, a king, a knight, a bishop, and a pawn are people, what is a rook?

King and Queen are obvious rulers of the land. The knights are experienced warriors that do as the King and Queen say. The bishops are spiritual leaders that advise the King and Queen in the war of Chess versus other lands. Pawns are the weak, inexperienced individuals. The rook is the tower in which a person operates from the inside. Think of this person as the general strategist doing his or her own thing with or without the Kings approval.

This reminds me of Dragonlance with the Black Robes/dark clerics and White Robes/light clerics

But when I look up "marquess" it doesn't show the person is a fighter, just a leader.

Weird same thing when i look up a bishop. Couldn't find a fighter amongst them.

A rook is simply a castle.

From good old Wikipedia:

Also of note: Lewis chessmen rooks are infantry:

Compare The suits on the cards to the pieces in chess.

would the ace be the rook?

A rook in my opinion is like a catapult, in old wartime scenarios......

I think that the rook is an army of people that use the same bricks to move towers or something

quinnkrueger

Or the rook is a tower being carted by something possibly a castle on wheels

BlitzChess

if you mold two bishops together does it create a knight ?

quinnkrueger

No, because the knight and the bishop are worth the same amount of points (3)

Plus I wouldn't think that one bishop would some how shapshift into a horse and the other bishop would decide to ride it.

The Elephant shape shifted into a Catholic Bishop.

Correct.

Just as the Chariot "shape shifted" into a Castle.

Maybe Friday the 13th is different, because everybody agrees on everything.

I like the abstractions of the pieces of Western Chess. Abstractions into symbols of power . . .

This is my chess set. It is a splice of 2 sets. The Romans is Caesar Augustus. The bishops are Senators. The Rook is a column commemorating the victory over Carthage.

Black is Napoleon and Josephine. The bishop is Talleyrand. The rook is Napoleon's eagle standard (based on Roman).

All the pieces are in authentic costumes.

You can get them on Ebay, made by Classic Games (antique).

There is a thread at the top of the Books and Equipment forum where you should post your Chess set.

I like it here. It's more organic.

Agreed, but the Ugly Chess Sets thread under “Books and Equipment” would be more appropriate. Maybe a mod can move it.
