I read "the Queen's Gambit" years ago, and I seem to remember Beth saying she thought Rooks were like cannons, firing into the opposition's position from afar.
In India, we hve different names for these pieces
Pawn = Pawn/Soldier
Knight = Horse
Bishop = Camel
Queen = Minister/Secretary (Wazir)
Rook = Elephant
Makes more sense
