probably there would be more pieces with jump moves like the knight. right now there is only the knight. also, probably there would be more than 24 pieces each side. pawns would be the same. in my view stalemate should be the same as it makes the endgame more interesting and challenging for the winning side and the losing or drawing side.
If Chess Were Created Now...

What game are you playing? There are 16 pieces for each side at the beginning of the game.

hahahahaha
Chess is perfect but one thing may be considered that it is hard to "tie-break" for current version.
Maybe any "chess" which has no posibility of draw is better .

i would like to play chess in which there are only pawns kings and bishops. that would be fun.
Very drawish though

There would be mandatory commercials after opening and before engame in otb tournaments. You would be able to buy a pawn on 2nd rank for $20 and additional queen for $300. There would be loud sound effects every time you capture a piece and a loud *FINISH HIM!* sound effect every time you announce mate in 3 or less. After checkmate you would be obliged to fight your opponent in a cake fight to confirm your win.

You would have some cards and give a team some clues to guess something just like every other modern lame game.

Ouch, too true. But you forgot to add that you would be able to buy completely useless cosmetic 'skins' and fancy pieces for $10

there would be at least 3000 pieces each player controls with a rulebook 9000 pages long that only pros read also each players is allowed a limit of 10 computers as assistance thats right only 10!

The pieces would have different names:
King = General
Queen = Marine Corps
Rook = Tank
Bishop = Sniper
Knight = Cavalry
Pawn = Infantry

Good one too!

Why on earth do poeple constantly want to change an already perfect game?
Because we're contemplating "what if," not actually saying we should change anything.

lol great comment
...How do you think the rules or design would be changed to suit a modern audience?
The pieces wouldn't be Black vs White for sure, especially with White always moving first.
Maybe the King and Queen dynamic would be changed as well?
Stalemate probably would have been made a win for the side doing the stalemate (as evidenced by the general outrage new players have with stalemate
)
