If Magnus cheated in a tournament, would anyone even notice?

I would like to preface this by saying that I do not believe that Magnus is a cheater, nor do I believe that Magnus ever has cheated. This question is simply hypothetical.

Whenever people cheat in chess, a common way that people find out is by realizing that people are playing far above their skill level. When a 400 rated player plays a near-perfect game, it can often be easily pinpointed to cheating. But as players get better and better, the line between players and perfection gets thinner and thinner, and at some point the line begins to somewhat blur. To date, there has never been a known instance of a super GM being officially caught cheating.

Furthermore, whenever Magnus has a great performance in a tournament, people look at it and merely see it as a testament to Magnus' skill and dominance in chess. People don't question or show dubiousness towards Magnus' achievements. So, hypothetically, if Magnus Carlsen cheated in a chess tournament, would people even realize he cheated? Or would it merely be written off as a stellar performance on his part?

If it happened in one game, no, especially since engine lines can be memorized to many moves. In the long run, yes, because he wouldn’t be playing 2850, he’d be playing 3500, and anti-cheating software would easily pick up patterns.

But it’s a moot point. He wouldn’t cheat. No chance. He has far too much to lose.

The question isn't "would he", or even "could he", but rather: "if" he cheated by using an engine, would they be able to detect that, or would they just assume Magnus was playing brilliant games?

And I answered just this. In one game, no. In a series of games, yes.

Magnus doesn't get special treatment just for being the world champion, if he cheats, he will be caught
