If you could add a new rule to chess, what would it be?

That I can reject a play by my opponent if I don’t like it.

A chance to take-back once a game, and you can only do it within 15 seconds of the move being played

A pawn can be promoted to King!

If your opponent has promoted a pawn to King, you must mate both kings to win.  For the player with the extra King, only 1 king must be out of check for the move to be legal and a King cannot be captured.  So, for example, in the following diagram:

White can play 1.a8(Q)+, or he could play 1.a8(K), and after 1...Qd5+ (White is in check as both kings are attacked), 2.Kb8, 2.Qg2, 2.Kg1 are all examples of legal moves.

Makes things interesting.  Do you promote to win (to Queen)?  Or do you promote to not lose (to King)?

No King can be captured, so in that above example, if 2.Qg2, 2...Qxa8 would be illegal!

chess, but (good) openings are randomly predetermined. That would be fun to see...

I would revive the rule that allows people to promote to their opponents piece. There is an old puzzle that relies on that.

New rule: at any time I get to announce that I am leaving the game for awhile, or maybe changing my name. My opponent is then forced to beg me not to leave and asks me why I’m so sad. Once the appropriate amount of self-gratification occurs, I then announce that I am back.

Sadly, people are more likely to give you covid than pity.

Well, that is a pity. thumbup.png

King can 2 steps lateral one step forward knight jump but only to get out of check. Makes the cheap strategy of throwing pieces toward the king with no specific tactical aim except to alter and overrule deeply conceived plans less effective. The two main problems in chess IMO are the finiteness of mating nets and memorization of engine suggested lines.
