If You Could Go to Dinner with Any Chess Player, Who'd You Pick?

Sort:

You would get a three and half hour dinner with this person at any restaurant of your choosing.

LIST YOUR TOP 3:

mine?

1.  Yasser Seirawan

He seems to have endless stories from the past that are interesting.  SEemingly genuinely nice personality.

2.  Jennifer Shahade

She seems so friendly and warm of a person.  I'd just want to meet her to chat about anything (chess or not).

3.  Hikaru Nakamura

Very outspoken chess genius, who I'd love to ask tons of chess-related questions to.  I'd pick Magnus here, but I fear Magnus wouldn't be as talkative and outgoing as Naka.  The conversation might stall.

I feel Naka is outgoing and talkative enough that I'd be able to get him to divulge useful stuff for me.

Heh, yeah, imagine Magnus on a date. One word answers, body language shows total lack of interest, excuses himself from table and leaves early. Sends a text from home "I've blocked your number."

I'd rate zero out of 10 lol.

BigDoggProblem

Ivanchuk. He seems like a total nutjob. It would be entertaining.

ArchieBunker03

Anna Rudolf. That girl is so fine lol.

Spassky. Tartakower and Tal in their primes would provide fairly sparkling conversation, I reckon. Assuming of course that we're allowed players from the past. Dr Tarrasch and Nimzowitsch might make rather heavy weather dates, especially if invited along together. And why not take Paul Morphy to the opera?

Because he'd interrupt - and did interrupt - Bellini's Norma; aw, heck, I'd rather see Wozzeck, anyway.

Karpark

Ha ha! My understanding was that Morphy actually wanted to see the opera and that the insistence that a game be played was made by the 'allies'. I do remember reading that the three of them made a lot of noise to the annoyance of the other opera goers.

Tal! We would get smashed and battle eachother over lobster tail!

I've seen Jennifer Shahade in person before, the latest occurrence being at the Poker Tournament ran for the players at the National Open in Las Vegas, Nevada in late June of this year.

Who would I go to dinner with?  Alexandra Kosteniuk!

I'd probably be too nervous to walk up and talk to her if I ever bumped into her in person.

I must say, Jen seems ...different somehow when I have seen videos of her in the poker world.  Her personality just seems different.

The potential "problem" with less talkative players is that you might have to work very hard to make it a good convo.

That's why I ddin't pick guys like Fischer, Carlsen, Ding Liren, Wei Yi, MVL, etc.

defenserulz

Actually for Wei and King, it could just be a language barrier problem.  Although, their voices are very soft and they seem shy too.

'Nikprit's, pick - Although, I'm violating a confidence, not-to-tell.  [ ;

Our of the current guys, Svidler, Aronian, and Giri from first to last pick.

Rather than risking leaving someone out I'll list the three I've most enjoyed going to dinner with:

Gata Kamsky: My favorite American player. Great guy and talkative. He talked about a lot of stuff I didn't expect him too.

Efstratios Grivas: Never let the Greek guy order! Dinner was ouzo. Maybe some lamb in there somewhere, but who can remember. Wonderful stories about places all over the world.

Jesse Kraai: First of all Jesse is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. Better yet, he's the only GM I've ever hung out with who was more interested in asking me about my chess than talking about his.
