10|0 and 5|5 seem pretty close to the same time control.
Maybe the longest and shortest games would be 5|5.

But the FIDE rapid standard 15|10 is better.

I don't count 10|0 as rapid. I play 15|10, which is rapid. 10|0 is this weird median time control.
15|10 is a longer time control that creeps closer to a classical time control without taking a couple hours like true classical.

We are not discussing here what my favorite time control, we are comparing TWO STRICTLY SPECIFIC time controls here.
10/0 and 5/5 are mathematically equivalent and 10/0 is blitz in disguise.
10/0=illegal fraction
5/5=1 wdym "mathematically equivalent"

In a 60 move game you have the same amount of time in both. However games usually last around 40 moves and 5|5 is more like 8|0 or something then.
Lol we have math savvy minds in this forum. Yes, equivalent in a 60 move game but at the very least, alternatives to one another which can skew your rapid or blitz rating how ever you want to manipulate that.
Personally, I think 15/10 or higher is rapid and less than that is blitz.
Popular opinion is 10 minutes is rapid due to demand.
*is taking calc BC* yes I do like math and yes it is because of popular demand, my rapid rating would still be provisional then ![]()
If you only want to discuss 5|5 vs 10|0, then the title is kind of misleading because most blitz players I've seen seem to prefer 3|2. Rapid rating is often a better indicator of chess ability as it leads to longer games which will test opening, midgame and endgame ability as well as letting players think carefully about their moves. Blitz on the other hand, will lead to much shorter games and players are more focused on time control and playing moves quickly than playing good chess. Blitz does arguably show more chess knowledge as being good at blitz will require you to have memorised several different tactical patterns, but it again, is more about playing chess quickly.
TL;DR Rapid is considered better because it gives higher quality of games whilst blitz just gives high quantity of games
I admit that the same cannot quite be said for 10|0 and 5|5 though as the 5 second increment make the time controls practically identical.
Don't need to talk too much! Just answer one simple question:
How can 10|0 mins ( rapid) is better for your improvement or skill level indicater etc... then a 5|5 mins ( blitz ). !?
