That Gotham Chess has a large following is clear evidence that stupid people are attracted to chess.
I'm wondering whether playing chess does something negative to some people's minds, who would otherwise be unexceptional or even fairly bright. Not all .... just some.
I am a noob and chess, and pretty much learning the scholar's mate, italians game pretty much carries you far. However, I feel like when someone does an unfamiliar opening, it then becomes tactical and analytical. So i feel like it is a 50/50 because it does start with opening knowledge so that is just what you know, then probably applying IG.
if you think chess has no relation to intelligence, you dont know what intelligence is.
being a good chess player obviously correlates with intelligence at least for one very trivial reason.Same way if you play basketball, you are prob slightly taller than average by virtue of the fact very short people almost never play at decent levels due to obvious handicaps.
if you are a chess expert, the odds you have an iq of 80 are extremely low. IF the average iq is 100 and you remove everyone below 1 standard deviation below the average, you bump the average up since you remove the ones lowering the mean. the kind of pattern recognition memory and tree pruning you need to be decent at chess makes it very unlikely for the low iq people to be represented in such population. (not impossible maybe some savant can be the exception to the rule on pure eidetic memory but this is virtually unheard)
I dont think chess makes you smart i think smart people are attracted to chess
