I had a long winning streak in chess. I was just 18 and my rich grandfather paid for hotel and expenses so I could play in the U S Open in Omaha Nebraska in 1959.
This was a strong tournament with more than one half of the players expert or above.
My first game [and first game ever in USCF] I played an expert and won with the Black pieces. Someone said to me: "You just beat the champion of Puerto Rico!"
But then I was paired with a well known master, Erich Marchand. This game was going along ok but had a terrible [for me] ending and ended my long winning steak.
