IM Daniel Rensch

Ok everyone. I love Danny Boy, and he taught me a lot about pawn structures and stuff ... but does anyone feel he is starting to get a little annoying? I got this feeling when he named Carlsen "Mag-Town", and put in parentheses (let's make it stick, guys!). Does anyone feel he is overdoing his silliness?

trigs

i find him funny and entertaining.

"I love Danny Boy, and he taught me a lot about pawn structures and stuff" -- You should have stopped right there. Quit while you're ahead.

I clicked on this topic absolutely 100% expecting to see a thread talking about how awesome IM Rensch is... it didn't even occur to me there'd be a negative "Damn, it's about time someone started a Rensch fan-thread, why didn't I think of that?" Is what I was thinking.

IM Rensch delivers great videos! He's funny as hell and unafraid to have a personality, and thats on top of the prolific A+ instruction.

Mimchi, I'm awarding you the Amuse-Me-Racoon Badge of Demerit

i guess we should just hijack this thread and make it into a "Rensch Fan Thread"!

No, but I did find the "Mag-Town" thing slightly annoying. Then again, how do you spice up something so boring as a Super-GM beating the rest of us plebs (even if we had help in losing from 3 Super-GM's) so solidly?

William_Smitham

I am not sure I understand... it has become a little annoying that he called Magnus "Mag-town," but you are comfortable in calling him "Danny Boy"?  Tongue out

Being a bit more serious though, I personally find his approach great.  Just like many other subjects, discussing chess can be a very boring and dry topic (depending upon how it is handled).  I find the silliness you refer to as a nice change of pace.  I do not find his presentation so distracting that it takes away from the subject.  But, to each their own.

Cordially,

William

Simply put, the only thing better than IM Rensch commentary would be IM Rensch with Yermo as his sidekick tossing in occassional jibes at people he has had a 20 year grudge with.

I can count on maybe one hand masters who are able to bring some personality to their lectures, Rensch is one of them and one of the main reasons I still have a premium membership.

What the f is happening in this THREAD-TOWN?

JG27Pyth

"..sluuurrrp...  yeah, that's coffee... "

that cracks me up every time.

No way Jose! If anything he's underdoing the silliness as I have now come to expect at least one laugh per minute. Bring it on!

This thread is now about how awesome IM Daniel Rensch is.  Great instructive teacher AND hilarious.  What more could you want?

I agree; IM Rensch is a dinosaur fighter pilot.

I happen to respect him and like him. His chess.com TV episodes with Pruess are wonderful, his videos are great, and his broadcast with the Mags vs the World was good as well. What makes him so popular is because how he is and his personality. I wish him luck becoming a GM because he said he was going to reorganize his life to become a GM in one of the last episods.

Nakamura is annoying not Rensch.

The silliness is fine and as mentioned a nice change of pace, but the real problem I have with his videos is that he tends to ramble on too much about things other than the instructional content sometimes. In one of his caro slav videos he was talking for like 10-15 minutes about opening preparation (how it should really be done) and maybe some psychology, and I guess it's useful advice but first of all that advice is hardly anything new (in fact he often ends up doing this every time he looks at a gm game in the opening Tongue out) and most importantly I didn't really want to see the pawn structure video for such a huge talk about opening preparation, I just wanted to see the plans behind the structure. All this before any real game was shown! And I have nothing against a person trying to make a lesson within a lesson, but his talk for the first 10-15 minutes was just completely overdoing it. That kind of thing should last 5 minutes at the very most. But then, for other people it may have been useful, you can't please everyone! I just think if he was going to do that he should have made a seperate video with a consistent title.

So he does that sometimes but still for the most part his videos are very good and instructional, and it's nice to listen to someone who seems to really be talking to you and has a personality. Let's face it, the passion and personality helps you remember whatever he's talking about better, even if that stuff isn't about chess Wink
