Thinking too much in't only cheating but also causing oneself unnecessary anxiety. My philosophy of Chess is that no Chess game should last longer than 20 minutes. Either good moves jump at me or they don't.

You are creating more stress on yourself by playing those crappy quick games that you are obviously not a fast enough calculator to play, it seems you need to learn how to play chess and not just move pieces.  If you expect to play this game without much calculation than maybe you should join cross country.

When I "left" the forum last month my rating was in the low 1300's. After I came back from my break I played Chess a couple of days and all of a sudden my rating was in the mid 1500's. To be honest, I'm afraid of my own success. The better I get at this game the more challenging the opponents I will need to play (unless I unwisely choose to play only weak opponents and in doing so hope I can milk the ratings system), and the more challenging my opponents, the lower the likelihood I'll win, and since I won't be winning many games, my rating will likely plummet.

Let's say that I am happy with my current rating and don't want to jeopardize it. Should I play only unrated games from now on or quit Chess for good?

"Let's say that I am happy with my current rating and don't want to jeopardize it. Should I play only unrated games from now on?" HUH??? A rating is just a number. It's not worth anything... just play chess.

A rather bloody strange one, kco, but not without precedent Smile - I played a 2500 in a tourney a coupla weeks back an' his average oppo number was summink in the 1700s - my average oppo number is 1885ish but my number only 2050 at the moment - I reckon some people on the site see their number as something with which they define their own self-worth Laughing an' I think that kinda inexplicable Undecided

I see the rating as somethinnk important too(it's a measure of your ability or not?) but try to play equally and take a loss that loses you points as a gain of knowledge that will grow your rating on time!

and as other said it's only a number!
