Make sure you understand algebraic chess notation and are comfortable using it.
Get any basic book, even if it's for juveniles.
Find a chess club or at least a couple people and work over-the-board with them and your basic book.
Learn some basics about opening play so you are not losing games within the first ten moves.
Play some unrated chess on this site. In fact, you challenge me to an unrated game and I'll give you a few tips. Also chess books, and the vote chess (be in a team) are both good ways to improve.
Play some live games, get the chess tactics trainer for $30 it's good for a whole year. Chess is mostly tactics, by doing tactic trainning it will improve your skills on the chess board.
