Make sure you understand algebraic chess notation and are comfortable using it.

Get any basic book, even if it's for juveniles.

Find a chess club or at least a couple people and work over-the-board with them and your basic book.

Learn some basics about opening play so you are not losing games within the first ten moves.

Play some unrated chess on this site. In fact, you challenge me to an unrated game and I'll give you a few tips. Also chess books, and the vote chess (be in a team) are both good ways to improve. Smile

Play some live games, get the chess tactics trainer for $30  it's good for a whole year. Chess is mostly tactics, by doing tactic trainning it will improve your skills on the chess board. As far as which part of the game you should start with first you should start with the end game. Oh, weclome to chess.com hope to see you around. Like wise if you send me message I'll be glad to give you some pointers that should get you on the right track.

I don't consider myself anything beyond a beginner-intermediate but I'd be willing to teach you a few things.  Just send me a message if you need any help, I'd be able to offer it.
