Learning basic tactics is a plus. Took me a while to do it, but I've rarely exhibited good study habits. I would think if you were dedicated your rating would climb higher very soon.

you need to develop your calculation and tactical skills. those are the 2 things that will actualy develop your skill; your ability to make accurate    calculation which in turn allows for accurate evaluation of the position. There are a million resources for working on tactics, including this website (tactics trainer). at 870, yove a good start but a very long way to go..so start with developing your raw skill before you delving into opening /middlegame studies. Also familiarize yourself with the most basics of end game- eg K+P vs K etc

hope this helps

You're a premium member so you'll be able to use tactics trainer as much as you like. I'd recommend maybe 20-30 minutes a day for now?
So long as you're actively thinking while doing them and are aiming to see the solutions before moving, they should really help.
Look at the Study Plans (also under Learn in the toolbar), and practice identifying common tactics (like pins, forks, discovered attacks etc) until it feels natural.
I'd also recommend becoming familiar with a couple of openings (at least the Ruy Lopez, Queen's gambit, and look 5-6 moves into different Sicilian lines. The French is also a solid defence to start with as black).
If you follow the basic ten rules (http://www.chess.com/article/view/the-principles-of-the-opening) you and have a basic tactical awareness you should jump to 1100-1200 fairly quickly.

Get a good, experienced coach, and to save money, not one too far from your level (maybe a local 1700). If you want additional things, you can post your games here for advice.

On chesstempo.com, I started doing 80 - 120 tactical problems/day. On that site, my tactics rating went from 800 to 1450 in less than 5 months. If you have a membership here, take advantage of the UNLIMITED tactics problems. They will help you.

Cheers

Yeah, im definitely in the same boat as you. If you need a victory you can probably beat me lol My game needs help, bad!

80-120 tactical problems jesus bucking christ, is that an exageration? Or did you literally spend 8 hrs a day doing tactical puzzles? Unless you are referring to just simple 1-3 move basics.  I also try to work on a few fairly difficult tactical puzzles per day, but 100 problems a day? shit. I hope you take your time and try to solve the puzzles in 1 go! Excellent work on the rating boost btw, that is massive!

Are you any good at Google? You will get a lot more accurate advice quicker by Googling 'how to improve at chess'.

All of this advice is fine, but there is something very fundamental missing that at your level will do you a world of good:

Before every move as yourself this:

  • Does my opponent have a peice hanging?
  • Will the move I'm about to make leave a peice hanging?

If you can stop dropping peices for nothing you'll see a marked increase just from that.

Real nice, someone's legitimately looking for advice here.  If you can't be constructive why post?
